Sonography Description: A sonographer otherwise known as an ultrasound technician is a medical professional who is qualified to operate specialized high tech equipment used to scan different parts of the body of a patient. Salary: The average salary for sonographers is around $60,000. If the person in this field continues his education then this amount could be increased further up to $80,000 and above.

Education and Training:

Education and Training A medical sonographer may enter the field through on-the-job training in a sonography practice. They may also train through a formal education program or a mixture of both formal and on-the-job training. Formal education programs are available as either and associate’s or bachelor’s degree. The most common are the 2-year programs. After earning registration, sonographers must maintain it through completing continuing education as required. Credentials may be earned in many specialty areas, including nervous system, breast, abdomen, cardiac, and vascular sonography.


Clothing Sonography students are required to meet dress code which includes wearing the Program specified scrub top, pant, warm-up jacket and white shoes. The clothing requirements vary between the different school and program you are in. Generally they wear scrubs with their hair tied back and out of the way.


Hours Most full-time sonographers work about 40 hours a week. Some sonographers work overtime. Also, sonographers may have evening and weekend hours when they are on call and must be ready to report to work on short notice.

Type of Person:

Type of Person The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer needs to have the ability to have strong didactic and scanning ability to create a diagnostic film for interpretation. The sonographer should be able to give differential diagnosis when needed, and know what additional scanning skills need to be performed involving individual care. Knowledge of and experience in recognizing and documenting disease will be an asset in his/her career. The ability for calm and reasoned judgment regarding the patient is crucial. Respect for the patient and their privacy are expected of the sonographer.
