Percentage(%) Composition: Percentage(%) Composition
Percent Composition: Percent Composition Compounds are ALWAYS composed of elements in fixed ratios. This is often referred to as the Law of Definite Proportions. Identifies the elements present in a compound as a mass percent of the total compound mass.
PowerPoint Presentation: Indicates the relative amount of each element present in a compound. The mass percent(% Composition) is obtained by dividing the mass of each element by the total mass of a compound and converting to percentage.
PowerPoint Presentation: %Composition= x 100 = % Mass of element Mass of compound
PowerPoint Presentation: This law states that elements are always present in the same proportions by mass in a compound. I.e. H 2 O is always 2H:1O any other proportions would not form water. H 2 O 2 is hydrogen peroxide Since compounds always form in fixed proportions, we can calculate the Percent Composition of an element in a compound.
Calculating percentage composition: Calculating percentage composition Step 1 : Calculate molar mass Step 2 : Divide the subtotal for each element’s mass by the molar mass. Step 3 : Multiply by 100 to convert to a percentage.
Example 1: Example 1 Calculate the molar mass of water, H 2 O. Step 1 H- 2(1.01) = 2.02 O- 1(16.0) = 16.0 ________ 18.02
PowerPoint Presentation: Step 2 & 3 2.02/18.02 X 100 = 11.21% 6.0 /18.02 X 100 = 88.79 % Water is composed of 11.21 % hydrogen and 88.79 % oxygen.
