Definition of Risk Management: 

Definition of Risk Management Risk Management is the identification, assessment, and prioritization of risks, followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability and/or impact of unfortunate events or to maximize the realization of opportunities.

Necessary components contributing to the success of running a successful tennis center: 

Necessary components contributing to the success of running a successful tennis center Court layout and orientation Court surface type Lighting & Fencing Court equipment and accessories Grounds and the surrounding area Level of player(s) Spectators Understanding the importance in presenting a safe facility which follows proper risk management protocols, you first need consider the following:

Court Layout and Orientation: 

Court Layout and Orientation The standard dimensions of a tennis court (Total playing area – TPA) are defined by the ITF’s (International Tennis Federation) Rules of Tennis. The ITF has a minimum required court enclosure size of 36.6m X 18.3m. (necessary space to avoid injury) Optimum tennis court orientation is north – south, in order to minimize sun glare

Court Surface Type: 

Court Surface Type The four types include clay, grass, hard and carpet. You must consider intended use and level of play Tournament requirements Maintenance obligations and cost Surface lifespan Site conditions

Lighting & Fencing: 

Lighting & Fencing Lighting levels depend on level of play The ITF standard for lighting is 1000 (Lux) of Illuminance with for professional players. Lighting poles should not be placed within court enclosures For fencing you must consider spectator viewing, proximity of trees and conflicting with players

Court Equipment and Accessories: 

Court Equipment and Accessories This is dependent on which surface has been selected. General needs include net posts, nets and center straps. The ITF recommends that non-obtrusive winding mechanisms are not used since they create a safety hazard to players.

Grounds and Surrounding Area: 

Grounds and Surrounding Area Venue security to avoid break-ins and graffiti Make sure parking is accessible for fans and players and meets the city council’s guidelines E nsure the courts have sufficient covering in case of inclement weather Outdoor area for gathering and functions

Level of Player(s): 

Level of Player(s) Decide which level or levels you are trying to accommodate: recreational, club competitors, or International and National competitors Following the minimum guidelines for court dimensions and surfacing

Spectators: 

Spectators Insure spectators have sufficient court viewing, covered areas, seats, accessible toilets and food and beverages.

Facility Hazards: 

Facility Hazards Not managing and maintaining the minimum requirements for safe play according to the ITF. Assuring the spectators as well as the players are in a safe environment enabling everyone to enjoy the tennis center.

Facility DIM: 

Facility DIM Development Trained security personnel Trained staff working all events (umpires, ball boys, concessions, pro shop, etc.) Facility must be up to USTA (United States Tennis Association) standards as well as ITF standards Proper signs for safety throughout the facility Plan of action in case of emergency

Facility DIM ctd. Implement It is required for staff to be CPR / First Aid certified Security cameras would be installed throughout the facility and surrounding the facility Have ITF and USTA officials certify the facility before any events are hosted

Spectators DIM Development Enable spectators to be able to view match without being at risk for being hit with a ball Find ways for spectators to easily have access to information they need Ensure spectators that they have the freedom to come and go as they please

Players DIM Development Understand the guidelines for maintaining safe court surface Understand the proper certifications for Athletic Training staff and physicians Make space for shade and water cooler

Players DIM ctd. Implement Monitor the court surface and the surroundings daily Be aware of the weather every day of an event Have large umbrellas for shade on changeovers on hot sunny days Create plenty of space for water coolers near bench

Management Have trained umpires and tournament officials who have pre determined a plan of action under any circumstance Monitor having enough water to stay hydrated Always have a certified athletic trainer courtside Have staff members be in charge of checking the court for safety before every match begins
