Chapter 7: Decimals Converting Tenths and Hundredths M5.1b

Slide 2:

Converting Decimals to Fractions Do you remember the place values in decimals? Converting Tenths and Hundredths: Therefore, we can say that… 1 tenth (1 decimal place) = 0.1 , represents 1 hundredth (2 decimal places) = 0.01 , represents Tenths e.g. 1 2 3 . 4 5 Hundreds e.g. 100 Tens e.g. 20 Ones e.g. 3 Hundredths e.g. M5.1b

Slide 3:

So, we can start converting decimals to fractions beginning with the tenths place… 1 decimal place = 1 “zero” in the denominator 1 decimal place = 1 “zero” in the denominator Remember: The value of the numerator is the same as the digit after the decimal point 0. 4 = 0. 7 = M5.1b

Slide 4:

Therefore, we can do the same for the hundredths place… 2 decimal places = 2 “zeros” in the denominator 2 decimal places = 2 “zeros” in the denominator Remember: The value of the numerator is the same as the digits after the decimal point 0. 4 2 = 0. 75 = M5.1b

Slide 5:

When we change the decimal to a fraction, do we need to express it in its simplest form? YES!!! 0. 4 = = ÷ 2 ÷ 2 final answer in its simplest form 0. 22 = = ÷ 2 ÷ 2 final answer in its simplest form M5.1b

Slide 6:

To sum up what we have learnt so far… When we convert decimals to fractions, we must remember: The place value of tenths (1 decimal place) has a denominator of 10 (1 “zero”) e.g. ( ) The place value of hundredths (2 decimal places) has a denominator of 100 (2 “zeros”) e.g. ( ) We should always remember to express our fractions in their simplest forms M5.1b
