Supernatural Faith : Supernatural Faith Why I Believe in God, and in what Jesus Christ has revealed us. Human faith : Human faith The firm belief of one person in another. We trust the scientists, the journalists, our parents, the lawyer, etc. Without human faith we would be completely isolated in society. You cannot trust anyone. SUPERNATURAL FAITH : SUPERNATURAL FAITH The virtue of faith is a supernatural virtue by which, with the inspiration and help of God's grace, we believe that what he has revealed is true, not because its intrinsic truth is seen with the natural light of reason, but because of the authority of God who reveals it, of God who can neither deceive nor be deceived. FAITH : FAITH Properties of the act of faith: Supernatural (gift from God, for us, to see God). Voluntary (nobody can be forced to believe; the will command the intellect to assent = the own will). Infallible (it cannot be wrong; it cannot clash with sciences; based on the authority of God). Firm (excluding any doubt). Ecclesial (Our mother the Church is the deposit of the revelation) Faith is a Gift : Faith is a Gift Reason does not suffice to believe in Revelation. We need the gift of Faith. “And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven” (Mt. 16:17). Faith Is a Human Act : Faith Is a Human Act I want to believe, to trust God. Trusting in God and cleaving to the truths he has revealed are contrary neither to human freedom nor to human reason. In the act of faith, intellect and will cooperate with God’s grace. Faith Needs Freedom : Faith Needs Freedom “To be human, man's response to God by faith must be free, and therefore nobody is to be forced to embrace the faith against his will. The act of faith is of its very nature a free act” (CCC, 160). We accept it because it is the best for us. Faith Needs Reason : Faith Needs Reason “Although faith is above reason, yet there can never be any real disagreement between faith and reason, because it is the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith and who has put the light of reason in the human soul” (Vatican I). Faith Makes Us One With the Church : Faith Makes Us One With the Church By faith, we become members of the Church. Membership in the Church requires it. Faith Is Necessary for Salvation : Faith Is Necessary for Salvation “Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for obtaining that salvation. ‘Since without faith it is impossible to please God’ and to attain to the fellowship of his sons, therefore without faith no one has ever attained justification, nor will anyone obtain eternal life 'but he who endures to the end” (CCC, 161).
