Who ?What ?: Mass-pedigree is modification of pedigree method and also known as modification of Bulk method. Name it self indicate that, it is mixture of two methods .... i.e 1) Mass selection ( Bulk method) 2) Pedigree method What ?Definition: Mass pedigree method refers to growing segregation material by bulk (mass) method when condition are unfavourable for selection and use of progeny testing (pedigree method) when conditions are favourable for selection. DefinitionBasics: The Bulk period may be varies from one to few generation depending upon the occurrence of favourable conditions. The Bulk period is terminated as soon as favourable conditions for selection occur For example, in wheat dry season is not suitable for selection of straw strength, plant height, earliness and resistence to some disease. Dry season occur frequently. Hence breeder has to wait for normal season to make effective selection for above characters in wheat so that material can be handled by “Bulk method” till normal condition occurs than they can use “pedigree method”. BasicsProcedure for Mass-pedigree: Procedure for Mass-pedigreeProcedure for Mass Pedigree: Step 1 : Hybridization Parents are selected according to objectives of breeding programme . A simple or complex cross is then made depending upon number of parents involved. Step 2 : F 1 generation The F 1 generation is spaced planted and harvested in Bulk. The number of F1 plant should be as large as possible, usually more than 20 plants are selected (Note : If there is favourable condition after F1 than Follow step 4.) Procedure for Mass PedigreeProcedure for Mass Pedigree: Step 3 : F2 – F6 Generation F2 to F6 generation is planted at commercial seed rates and spacings and Harvested in Bulk after each year. During this period if there is favourable condition found follow pedigree method as mentioned in step 4. Step 4 : Pedigree method After obtaining suitable environmetal condition for disease development or which we want applied Pedigree method for handling Segregating material and than release as a variety after complition of Pedigree Method. Procedure for Mass PedigreeAdvantages : When there is unfavourable condition for Progeny testing we can grow segregating material by Bulk method and when favourable condition for progeny test are obtained then we can use progeny test (Pedigree Method) AdvantagesDisadvantages: It may takes more year for releasing variety as compared to “Pedigree method” and “Bulk- method” It requires more land and labor than the bulk or mass methods. DisadvantagesVariety of Onion: Onion variety named CO(On) 5 developed through mass-pedigree method by Tamilnadu Agriculture University (TNAU- Tamilnadu ) in year 2001 The parental line AC (SP.1) was collected from Gnanamedu village of Cuddalore district. Variety of OnionCharacteristics Of CO(On) 5: This variety has the ability of free flowering and seed set throughout Tamil Nadu. It possess high bulb yield 18.9 t/ha (18.8 per cent higher than CO.4) in a crop duration of 90 days . It is free flowering type with seed setting ability of 250-300 kg/ha and so it is propagated through seeds. It possesses attractive pink coloured bold size bulbs. The total soluble solids content is 13 per cent. It is adaptable to Coimbatore, Trichy , Pudukottai , Nagapattinam , Thanjavur , Tiruvarur , Theni , Madurai, Namakkal , Cuddalore , Tiruvannamalai , Thoothukudi , Erode and Dharmapuri districts. Characteristics Of CO(On) 5Flowering and fruit of Onion(CO5): Flowering and fruit of Onion(CO5)Variety of Cotton(G.hirsutum L.): Cotton variety named H 1226 was developed through Mass-pedigree method under All India Coordinate Cotton Improvement Project - (AICCIP) by Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar , Haryana It is first variety which is developed by Mass-pedigree method. Variety of Cotton( G.hirsutum L.)Characteristics of H 1226: H 1226 : It is the first cotton leaf curl virus disease resistant variety recommended for release for cultivation in the Haryana State . This variety was developed through Mass-pedigree method through the cross RS 2013 x H777 . Its plants are having 2-3 strong monopodia , small size cup shape hairy light green leaves, yellow flower and dull creamish anther with pointed round bolls. Its petal are dark yellow at the base and light yellow at the periphery/tips. This variety matures in 170-175 days (Early maturing) and suitable for normal sowing i.e. around 15 th May.
