BACKGROUND:

BACKGROUND Since the 1980s, Margonda Raya Avenue in Depok , West Java, has been developing into a shopping and culinary delights center. In each sides of the 3-kilometer (+1.85 miles) road that divides the city of Depok from north to south, there are a lot of vendor which selling various foods and beverages, include street vendors

BACKGROUND:

BACKGROUND the existence of these street vendors has some negative effects to the neighborhood such as : marring the cleanliness (14%), giving a slum characteristic to the surrounding area (11%), producing unpleasant scent (6%). Food and beverages sold by the street vendors should be free from bacteria such as E. coli or other bacteria commonly carried by flies

OBJECTIVE:

OBJECTIVE Research to measure the fly density and environmental factors in street vendors foods was done along the Margonda Avenue, Depok City, West Java Province, Indonesia used crossectional design.

METHODS:

METHODS This research is an observational study with cross-sectional design (August - September 2009) 100 street vendors were selected randomly, from which different types of foods were sampled for fly density and Escherichia coli . Fly grill was used to measure the fly density, otherwise the analysis of E. coli using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method. Environmental factors of street vendors and personal hygiene of food hanlers were observed. Analizing of the data used Chi Square Test and Logistic Regression.

RESULT:

RESULT It was found that the fly density was a quite high (more than 6) with the average in each location were 9.38 in Point-1, 8,53 in Point-2, and 10.33 in Point-3.

RESULT:

RESULT

RESULT:

RESULT Forty one (41) percent of samples contaminated by E. coli and 14% contaminated by Salmonella.

RESULT:

RESULT

RESULT:

RESULT Based on the statistical test, there was an association between flies density and E. coli contamination on food. But statistically, high flies density will prevent contamination as much as 3.86 times (OR=0.26).

RESULT:

RESULT

RESULT:

RESULT The average flies’ density around the street vendors area were high. Almost half of the food sold by street vendors was contaminated by E. coli , some contained other pathogens such as Salmonella.

CONCLUSION:

CONCLUSION street shops must be organized. create a hygienic and healthy atmosphere by holding workshops on food hygiene and sanitation, food safety, and vendors or food processing certification. Further research must be done to measure environmental factors and sanitation facilities to reduce food contamination by pathogen bacteria.
