What is it? How did it Happen? Funding Package Slide 5: 26th May 2005 5 Where is it? The Severn Centre is in the village of Highley in the Bridgnorth District of Shropshire. Highley is one of the most deprived wards in Shropshire Highley is relatively isolated and lacking in services The Centre serves a population of about 6,000. Slide 6: 26th May 2005 6 What is it? The Severn Centre is a newly opened Multi-Use Community Centre with a range of facilities and services The Centre replaces out-of-date buildings The Centre is run by the community with support from Bridgnorth District Council. The project came about due to a combination of factors: The determination and cohesion of the local community The vision and leadership of the District Council Backing from key funders throughout the project Community-focused professional team. The way to deal with large projects is one bit at a time Slide 14: 26th May 2005 14 ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT Marketing and publicity Deal with legal issues sooner rather than later Achieve a balance between hitting the ground running and trying to run before you can walk Continuity of personnel. Reccy Rangers : 26th May 2005 16 Reccy Rangers Crime diversion scheme 8+ Reccy sac Outreach Key people Coaches : 26th May 2005 17 Coaches Coach Awareness Evening Coach Education Coach Mentoring Links with ScUK CDO for CPD Coach Education : 26th May 2005 18 Coach Education 57 funded places Courses include: Tennis Assistant Tag Rugby Fundamentals Netball First Aid GP & CP Trampoline Cricket Assistant Youth Sport Development Officer : 26th May 2005 19 Assistant Youth Sport Development Officer To establish a network of sustainable physical activity opportunities in the Highley and surrounding areas through direct provision and working in partnership with the Severn Centre, local school, clubs and the community to positively influence community development and the uptake of physical activity. After school clubs Holiday programmes Junior clubs Physical Activity Coordinator : 26th May 2005 20 Physical Activity Coordinator To work in partnership with the Primary Care Trust, Social Services and Childcare Development to encourage and develop physical activity choices for the young, elderly and those on low incomes serviced by the Severn Centre, Highley based on the ‘Exercise Referral Systems: A Quality Assurance Framework’.
