It has complex plant associations due to tides and variations in salinity. Salt marshes function as a source of food and of fertilizer to the estuary . Mangrove trees that grow along the coasts, in estuaries, function as natural barriers against cyclones and storms and help increase fish life. Their prop roots reduce tidal currents, cause extensive deposition of mud and silt and provide surfaces for attachment of organisms. The penetration of these roots and burrows of organisms like the crabs here, are indispensable for mineral recycling. The natural estuarine vegetation plays a major role in cleaning the polluted waters of the Adyar River .Slide 2: Dr.J.Pandiyan, Asst.Prof. AVC College, IndiaSlide 3: Dr.J.Pandiyan, Asst.Prof. AVC College, IndiaSlide 4: Dr.J.Pandiyan, Asst.Prof. AVC College, India Adyar Estuary is located 1 kilometre away from South Bank Road ; 1.2 kilometre away from South Beach Road ; 1.3 kilometre away from Santhome High Road ; 1.3 kilometre away from South Bank Road ; 1.3 kilometre away from Mahatma Gandhi Road ; Adyar Estuary is geographically located at latitude (13.0132 degrees) 13° 0' 47" North of the Equator and longitude (80.2772 degrees) 80° 16' 37" East of the Prime Meridian on the Map of Chennai.
