Integration of pediatric research A major CTSA theme was to foster collaboration across the lifespan ISSUES: CTSA involved merging Penn and CHOP GCRC’s CHOP is a free standing children’s hospital, with an independent GCRC established in 1965 SOLUTIONS: Joint protocol review committee (“GAC”) Joint cores Separate budgets Pediatric representation throughout Future plans to incentivize research covering the age spectrum

Key challenges : 

Key challenges Different clinical skill sets needed for children vs adults Different priorities for pediatrics and internal medicine Areas unique to pediatrics Inclusion of pediatricians on all aspects of the CTSA Unequal budgets

Goals for the steering committee : 

Goals for the steering committee Establishing official NCRR guidelines for the substantial inclusion of pediatrics in all aspects of the CTSA: Ped. research is proportionate to the patient base Ped. representation in the leadership Appropriate ped. expertise amongst research staff Ped. inclusion in training slots Including peds. in community outreach programs Establishing regular communication amongst CTSA pediatric leadership. Establishing pediatric research networks. Ongoing meetings.
