Slide 2:

Our Food We eat a different type of food. There are many states in India having different types of foods. We eat different types of foods like— 1} South Indians eat rice, dal, curry, papad , pickle. 2} western-side people eat chapatis, nan, parothas, curry. There are also many nutrients in these foods.

Slide 3:

Nutrients- the important substances present in our foods are called nutrients. There are :- 1)Carbohydrates- They provide energy to our body. They are also called “energy giving foods”. They are in potatoes, sweet potatoes, wheat, rice, bajra, maize, mango, papaya, water melon, sugarcane. 2)Proteins- They are needed for the growth and repair of our body.

They are often called “body building foods”. They are in gram, moong, dal, beans, peas, soyabeans. Meat, fish, paneer, eggs, milk. 3)Vitamins-Vitamins help in protecting our body against diseases. They also help in keeping our eyes, bones, teeth and gums healthy. They are- Vit a Vit b complex Vit c Vit d Vit e Vit k

Slide 5:

We get the following vitamins by eating following items- Vit A- Milk, Fish oil, Mango, Carrot, Papaya, and Spinach. 2) Vit B- Wheat, Rice, Liver. 3) Vit C- Orange, Guava, Tomato, Amla and Lemon. 4) Vit D- Milk, Butter, Liver, Eggs, Fish. NOTE :- VITAMIN D IS ALSO PRODUCED BY OUR BODY WITH THE HELP OF SUNLIGHT.

4)Minerals-Minerals help us fight against many diseases. There are many minerals in our food. They are- 1) Iodine 2) Phosphorus 3) Iron 4) Calcium We get the following minerals by eating following items- 1) Iodine- Iodised salt, Fish, Lobster, Ginger, Spinach. 2) Phosphorus- Milk, Bananas, Chillies, Rice, Wheat. 3) Iron- Apples, Liver, Pear, Spinach.

There are also many vitamins other than these, but these are common. Deficiency- Insufficiency intake of a particular nutrient for a long period of time may cause deficiency of that nutrient. Deficiency disease- Deficiency of a particular nutrient in diet over a long period of time may lead to some health problem. This is termed as deficiency disease . 4) Calcium- Milk, Eggs

Deficiencies due to lack of proteins- Stunted growth 2) Swelling of face 3) Discolouration of hair 4) Skin diseases 5) Diarrhoea Deficiencies due to lack of carbohydrates and proteins- The person’s growth may stop completely. The person becomes lean and thin and he/she may not even be able to move.

Vitamin/ Mineral Deficiency Disease Symptoms 1) Vitamin A Night Blindness Loss of vision in darkness, complete loss of vision. 2) Vitamin B Beriberi Weak muscles and very little energy to work. 3) Vitamin C Scurvy Bleeding gums, wounds take longer time to heal. 4) Vitamin D Rickets Bones become soft & bent. 5) Calcium Tooth & Bone decay Tooth decay weak bones. 6) Iodine Goiter Glands in the neck appear Swollen. 7) Iron Anaemia Weakness Diseases caused due to deficiency of some Vitamins & Minerals

Up till now we have seen about nutrients, but now we will see about water and roughage which are also an important part of our diet. Water- Water helps in absorption of nutrients from food. 2) Water helps in removal of waste matter from our body in the form of urine, sweat and feaces. 3) Water helps in maintaining our body temperature.

Slide 11:

Roughage- 1) Roughage absorbs water, swells up and adds bulk to our food. 2) Roughage has the scrubbing effect on the inner surface on the intestine and thus, keeps the intestine in healthy conditions. 3) Roughage keeps the bowel soft and helps in removal of Undigested matter easy.

Slide 12:

Suppose if one thinks that too much of fats will give me more energy, then he/she is wrong. We should always have everything in limited. Obesity- Excessive fats in one’s body leads to obesity. Balanced diet- A diet which contains all the nutrients in the right quantity along with water and roughage according to age, occupation, and condition of the body of an individual, is known as balanced diet.
