For some people, family was the only thing that kept them holding on during their persecution. In Incantation , Catalina didn’t want for any of her worldly possessions. She simply wanted her family. In Night , Elie held on for his father and lost all hope after he died. Guido in Life Is Beautiful, made up an entire game just to keep his son hopeful.

Wasn’t it dangerous to lower one’s guard, even for a moment, when death could strike at any time? Those were my thoughts when I heard the sound of a violin. A violin in a dark barrack where the dead were piled on the living? … Never before had I heard such a beautiful sound. – Night pg.94-95

Even the simple joy of walking outside was taken from the Jews. This picture seems simple, but a strong desire of many Jews was to be able to just get out of the concentration camp and live.

Another desire of the Jews was to be able to sit down and actually get to eat a meal again with their families.

The torah is a symbol of the Jewish religion . Religion was seen constantly throughout the Holocaust as many Jews questioned their faith while others stayed true.
