GEOGRAPHY:

GEOGRAPHY Terrain : mostly desert plateau in east, highland area in west; Great Rift Valley separates East and West Banks of the Jordan River Climate : mostly arid desert; rainy season in west (November to April)

HISTORY:

HISTORY Jordan is a land of rich history dating back to ancient Biblical times. At different periods several ancient kingdoms resided in Jordan including the kingdom of Edom, Moab and Ammon . Other kingdoms outside of the Jordanian region have also ruled over it including the Egyptians, Babylonians, Hittites and the Israelites. Even today Jordan is strategically located at the crossroads of what Christians, Jews and Muslims call the Holy Land. For this reason Jordan has played a pivotal role in the struggle for power in the Middle East.

GOVERNMENT:

GOVERNMENT The current government was established in 1946 when Jordan first became an independent and sovereign kingdom under the recognition of the United Nations. Jordan today is what is considered to be a constitutional monarchy.

ECONOMY:

ECONOMY Jordan is a small country with few natural resources. Its economic fortunes have been undermined by instability within the region. In 2010, there were 8 million visitors to Jordan. The result was $3.4 billion in tourism revenues.

MEDICAL TOURISM:

MEDICAL TOURISM Jordan really takes pride in it’s healthcare industry and has been a destination for medical tourism since the 1970s. In 2010 $1.4 billion was made just off medical tourism.

CULTURAL HERITAGE:

CULTURAL HERITAGE Jordan has a variety of cultural sites that help contribute to it’s tourism. One of the most famous is the rock city Petra which is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Petra was also featured in the Indiana Jones movie “The Last Crusade”.
