SOTL BridgesEngaging a Research Faculty in the Interdisciplinary Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: SOTL Bridges Engaging a Research Faculty in the Interdisciplinary Scholarship of Teaching and Learning The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Initiative at Indiana University Bloomington cultivates a vibrant, cross-disciplinary intellectual community. SOTL “fosters interdisciplinary knowledge, and strengthens the campus-wide sense of community that has always been one of Bloomington’s most valued assets.”
Moya Andrews,
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties, Indiana University Bloomington
SOTL “integrates all areas of the academic enterprise in a new and exciting way, so in fact the supposed teaching / research dichotomy disappears -- as it naturally should since both are ways of facilitating learning and developing a learning community.”
George Walker
Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, Indiana University Faculty productivity, collaboration, participation and feedback suggest that our SOTL enterprise builds community, enhances professional life and generates knowledge and momentum for this new area of scholarship.

Some recent thinking about scholarship of teaching and learning foregrounds disciplinary “styles.” A hallmark of the SOTL Initiative at Indiana University Bloomington is its cultivation of a vibrant, cross-disciplinary community of scholars of teaching and learning.
Participation data, comments from the administration, and productive collaboration among faculty members suggest the interdisciplinary nature of the initiative builds community, adds value to professional life, generates knowledge and maintains momentum for this new area of scholarship.
