With over 2 million known species, and many more awaiting identification, animals are the most diverse forms of life on earth. They range in size from 30-m (100-ft) long whales to microscopic organisms only 0.05 mm (0.002 in) long. They live in a vast range of habitats, from deserts and Arctic tundra to the deep-sea floor. Animals are the only living things that have evolved nervous systems and sense organs that monitor their surroundings. They are also the only forms of life that show flexible patterns of behavior that can be shaped by past experience. The study of animals is known as zoology.Types of animals:-: Types of animals:- Vertebrates:- Vertebrate, animal with a backbone, or spinal column, made of interlocking units called vertebrae. This strong but flexible structure supports the body and anchors the limbs, and it also protects the nerves of the spinal cord. Vertebrates include fish, amphibians, and reptiles, as well as birds and mammals. In all vertebrates, the spinal column forms part of a complete internal skeleton.Amphibians:- : Amphibians:- All amphibians belong to one of three main groups: the Caudata, or tailed amphibians, which includes the sirens ( top, left ), salamanders ( top, right ), and newts; the Anura, or tailless amphibians, which includes frogs and toads ( bottom, left ); and the Gymnophiona, which is made up of the wormlike caecilians ( bottom, right ).Four Limbs:- : Four Limbs:- Most mammals have four appendages, usually legs. These may be modified for walking upright, as in humans, whose upper legs and knees articulate at an angle that supports their weight with most stability; swimming, as in whales, whose vestigial hind legs are still present in the skeleton; or flying, as in bats, whose metacarpal bones are webbedInvertebrates:-: Invertebrates :- Invertebrate, any animal lacking a backbone. Invertebrates are by far the most numerous animals on Earth. Nearly 2 million species have been identified to date. These 2 million species make up about 98 percent of all the animals identified in the entire animal kingdom. Some scientists believe that the true number of invertebrate species may be as high as 100 million and that the work of identifying and classifying invertebrate life has only just begun .Field Cricket:- : Field Cricket:- The field cricket, with its chirping call, is one of the most familiar insects in North America. Nocturnal in its habits, the omnivorous field cricket feeds on a variety of insects, including aphids, and on vegetation.African Wolf Spider:- : African Wolf Spider:- The wolf spider belongs to a group of spiders that live in burrows and lie in wait for unsuspecting prey rather than capturing them in webs. Wolf spiders belong to the order Araneae, which contains approximately 30,000 species and 70 families of spiders. Wolf spiders are known for carrying their newly hatched young on their backsHow does animal communicate?: How does animal communicate? Animal Communication, interaction between animals in which information transmitted from one animal or group of animals affects the behavior of other animals. Animals typically exchange information using a signal, such as facial expression, sound, or touch. Communication between animals helps them coordinate the vital functions of their lives—namely, gathering food and hunting, staking out territory, mating, caring for young, and defending themselves.WHAT ARE ENDANGERED SPECIES? : WHAT ARE ENDANGERED SPECIES? Endangered Species, plant and animal species that are in danger of extinction, the dying off of all individuals of a species. Over 8,300 plant species and 7,200 animal species around the globe are threatened with extinction, and many thousands more become extinct each year before biologists can identify them. The primary causes of species extinction or endangerment are habitat destruction, commercial exploitation (such as plant collecting, hunting, and trade in animal parts), damage caused by nonnative plants and animals introduced into an area, and pollution. Of these causes, direct habitat destruction threatens the most species. eg:- California Condor , Snow leopard etc.SOME ENDANGERED SPECIES ARE:-: SOME ENDANGERED SPECIES ARE:- MOA:- This reconstruction of an extinct South Island giant moa is on display in a New Zealand museum. At one time over 20 species of this large, flightless bird inhabited the wilds of New Zealand. Already rare by the time Europeans arrived in the 18th century, moas became extinct within the next 100 years.Passenger Pigeon:- : Passenger Pigeon :- Once abundant in North America, the passenger pigeon became extinct in 1914 as a result of extensive hunting and loss of habitat. This specimen is from a museum in Saskatchewan, Canada.African Elephant:-: African Elephant :- Elephant populations are on the brink of extinction due to poachers who kill elephants for their ivory tusks. An international ban on ivory trade, instituted in 1989 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), has diminished the illicit ivory trade and reduced the killing. Over 120 countries support the ban.California Condor : California Condor The California condor, considered for years to be the most endangered species of bird in the United States, was removed from the wild in 1988 in an attempt to increase its numbers through captive breeding programs directed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Captive hatchlings have now been reintroduced into the wild.Thank You : Thank You Thank You You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
