Flowers Not all plants have flowers. However, in plants with flowers, the flower is the organ of sexual reproduction. Flowers contain the male and female reproductive parts of a flowering plant, or an angiosperm.

Parts of a Flower :

Parts of a Flower A flower is made up of several parts. The bottom of a flower is surrounded by petals. Sepals are a special kind of leaf. They protect the flower bud. In some flowers, the sepals look like small green leaves. In others, they are large and brightly colored.

Slide6:

The petals of a flower are just inside the sepals. After the sepals fold back, the petals of the flower can be seen. The petals are another kind of leaf. They may be white or brightly colored. Some flowers, such as roses and lilies, are sweet smelling and have large, colorful petals. Petals protect the reproductive organs of the plant and attract insects and other pollinators. Inside the petals are the reproductive organs for the plant.

Reproductive Organs :

Reproductive Organs The reproductive organs in a flower are the pistil and the stamen. The pistil is the female reproductive organ. The stamen is the male reproductive organ. A flower usually has one pistil with several stamens around it. These organs are located inside the circle of petals.

Some flowers have both male and female reproductive organs. These flowers are called perfect flowers. The lily is an example of a perfect flower. Other flowers may have only male or only female reproductive organs. These flowers are called imperfect flowers. Male flowers only have stamens. Female flowers only have pistils.
