Biography Born: October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia Parents: James Earl Carter, Sr., Lillian Gordy Siblings: Ruth Carter Stapleton, Gloria Carter Spann, and William Alton Carter III Spouse: Rosalynn Smith Carter Children: Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy Lynn

EDUCATION: 

EDUCATION Attended Plains public schools, Georgia Southwestern College, and Georgia Institute of Technology Received Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. He later did graduate work in nuclear physics at Union College.

POLITICS: 

POLITICS Became Georgia’s 76th governor in 1971. Served as chairman of the Southern Regional Education Board, the Appalachian Regional Commision, the Coastal Plains Regional Action Planning Commision, and the Southern Growth Policies Board. Became Democratic National Committee campaign chairman for the 1974 congressional elections. Won Democratic party nomination at the 1976 Democratic National Convention and was elected President on November 2,1976. Served as President from January 20,1977 to January 20,1981.

CARTER CENTER The Carter Center is founded by Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, in 1982. The Carter Center is located in Atlanta Georgia. The Center is dedicated to fighting disease, hunger, poverty, conflict, and oppresion. The Center operates 13 core programs, which have touched the lives of people in 65 countries, including the U.S.

Served on the board of directors and is a regular volunteer for Habitat for Humanity The Carter Center dedicated the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum to him, which is open to visitors. He also teaches Sunday school and is a deacon in the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains. In his spare time, Jimmy enjoys jogging, cycling, tennis, skiing, and fishing.
