Pulau Weh: only shallow corals (<3m) : signs of damage, deeper corals: minimal damage. Simuelue Island: moderate The northern Sumatra : the most severe damage changes to the coastline morphology, bathymetry of the surrounding waters. : moderate impacts (varied) (visible physical changes) Damage to coral reefs: 30% (impacts from the subsequent earthquake on March 28 is still not known)Malaysia : Malaysia Tsunami reached the northwestern coast of Malaysia no tsunami related damage (Assessment: March 2005)Thailand : Thailand Official assessment six provinces: affected by the tsunami ( Phang-Nga: most impacted ) The impact assessment (174sites assessed) 12% of the sites: severe impact 47% of the sites: low to moderate impact 41% of the sites: no visible impact Assessment in Surin Mu Koh Surin National Park: highly damaged (overall loss in coral cover: 8%) (by Coral Cay Conservation between February and March 2005)Myanmar: Myanmar An assessment of western Mergui Archipelago (Reef Check Europe and WorldFish Center in March 2005) only mildly affected by the tsunami Official government reports Subsequent assessments by NGOs Unofficial reports by tour operators and tourists literally untouched by the tsunami waves with little environmental damageSlide9: Regional Status Report of East Asian Coral Reefs will be disseminated at the next ICRI General meeting National reports in SE and NE Asia Summary of tsunami damage in SE AsiaSmall fund for local program: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Small fund for local program Sea fan Rehabilitation Project in Similan IslandSea fan Rehabilitation Project at Similan Marine National park, Phang Nga Province : Sea fan Rehabilitation Project at Similan Marine National park, Phang Nga Province Mr. Sakanan Plathong (Prince of Songkla University, Thailand) nearly 250 sea fans in Similan islands have fallen down. (about 10 % of sea fans found in Similan islands) Many of them are bigger than 1 meterSlide13: Rehabilitation (April 2005): trials for re-fix Seafan Monitoring (April - December 2005) Evaluation (December 2005)Slide14: To fix the sea fans (by steel and wire, marine cement, epoxy, etc) 30 - 40 volunteer divers (4-5 days) The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources support the field expenses for volunteer divers and a boat.
