NO DESTRUCTIVE WIDESPREAD TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS BASED ON HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA. HOWEVER...EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN A HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES IN THE REGION OF THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION. THIS STATEMENT IS ISSUED AS ADVICE TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. ONLY NATIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE DECISIONS REGARDING THE OFFICIAL STATE OF ALERT IN THEIR AREA AND ANY ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN RESPONSE. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES. FOR ALL OTHER AREAS COVERED BY THIS BULLETIN... IT IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY AT THIS TIME. THIS MESSAGE IS ISSUED AS ADVICE TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. Sample Change of Status Announcements:

Sample Change of Status Announcements Sample 1. NOTE THAT THE MAGNITUDE HAS INCREASED TO 8.2. THIS HAS CAUSED THE AREA OF ALERT TO INCREASE IN SIZE. Sample 2. NOTE THAT THE MAGNITUDE HAS DECREASED TO 7.6. THIS HAS CAUSED THE AREA OF ALERT TO DECREASE IN SIZE. Sample 3. NOTE THAT THE EARTHQUAKE DEPTH HAS INCREASED TO 150KM. AT THIS DEPTH THERE IS NO TSUNAMI THREAT AND THE WARNING AND WATCH ARE CANCELLED.
