What is WICEN SA Inc.? : What is WICEN SA Inc.? The Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network Incorporated [WICEN SA Inc] operates as a separate identity under the auspices of the Wireless Institute of Australia.


What is WICEN SA Inc.? : What is WICEN SA Inc.? WICEN SA Inc is a group of approximately 55 volunteer Radio Amateurs who provide their time and equipment to other emergency groups to enable the transmission, via radio networks, of voice and data messages from mobile field bases to a central control.


WICEN’S role : WICEN’S role Listed officially under the State Disaster Plan, WICEN SA Inc provides radio commun-ications and also co-operates with the State Emergency Service, The Salvation Army and The Red Cross and any other organisations requesting radio message handling assistance when emergencies arise.


WICEN’S experience : WICEN’S experience The members of WICEN and other fellow Radio Amateurs have provided communications for Walk Against Want, Bicycles SA, the Coopers Rally of SA and the Classic Adelaide Rally. These field exercises are used as a training forum to test radio equipment and operating skills for WICEN radio operators and their friends.

WICEN’S people : WICEN’S people The members provide their own radios (fixed and portable), computer and other equipment to augment WICEN’s own Radio Translators, Repeaters, Antenna systems and Data facilities. A number of WICEN SA Inc members have attended an SES radio training session using GRN (Government Radio Network) equipment and others have expressed interest in this training.

THE RADIO SPECTRUM : THE RADIO SPECTRUM WICEN uses HF amateur frequencies in the 80m, 40m, 30, 20, 17, 15 and 10m bands VHF frequencies in the 6m and 2m bands And UHF frequencies in the 70cm band WICEN has six hand held battery operated UHF (CB) radios for field contact work in addition to members’ own UHF CB equipment.


Transmission modes : Transmission modes WICEN uses voice (SSB and FM) together with data transmissions (packet and APRS [Automatic Position Reporting System) in its work.


WICEN’S equipment : WICEN’S equipment WICEN SA Inc has its own repeaters and translators some equipped with portable masts and antennas.


WICEN’S equipment : WICEN’S equipment WICEN SA Inc also has four wind generators, four sets of 80 watt solar panels, and batteries to provide power to operate radios away from the 240 volts mains on a continuous basis.
