Langston Terrace Symbolism:

Langston Terrace Symbolism By: Courtney, Minha, and Sam

“They’ve started to crack now.”:

“They’ve started to crack now.” The main character is talking about animal statues that she saw when she was little. We think this represents that a lot has changed since she was last there.

“whenever I run into an old friend, mostly at a funeral…”:

“whenever I run into an old friend, mostly at a funeral…” The main character is talking about how when she comes back to Langston Terrace , she sees most of her friends at funerals. We think this symbolizes death and meeting your old friends on sad occasions and being alone.

“...red mud surrounding the concrete walks had not yet been covered with black soil and grass seed…”:

“ ...red mud surrounding the concrete walks had not yet been covered with black soil and grass seed…” The main character is describing the plants outside of Langston Terrace. We think by the way the M.C. describes the landscaping that she is trying to insult the place, in any form possible.

“We danced in fireplug showers…”:

“We danced in fireplug showers…” The M.C. is talking about what she does with her new friends at Langston Terrace. We think this symbolizes a happy moment. Like fireworks are raining down on them on the 4 th of July.

“…played basketball in a nearby field…”:

“…played basketball in a nearby field…” The M.C. is talking about what she did with her new friends. We think this symbolizes a sincere moment and a field represents an open place where you can be free and do what you want.

“…played hide-n-seek at the lamppost…”:

“…played hide-n-seek at the lamppost…” Again, the Main Character is talking about what she did with her new friends at Langston Terrace. We think the lamppost represents a safe place. Light comes from the lamppost and you think of light, rather than darkness, you feel safe.

“It was home.”:

“It was home.” The Main character is talking about Langston Terrace. Home represents a loving environment, where you are safe and protected.

“Built on a hill, a group of tan brick houses and apartments with a playground as its center.”:

“Built on a hill, a group of tan brick houses and apartments with a playground as its center.” The M.C. is describing Langston Terrace. We think by the way the house is on a hill, rather than on a flat surface, that it is a powerful place because it is above all the others.
