West Texas Lighthouse for the Blind Not-for-profit 501(c) (3) corporation Established in 1963 Mission: to create, sustain and improve employment opportunities for people who are blind and visually impaired in San Angelo and the surrounding area.

OUR GOAL Provide a 40 Hour work week with benefits. All employees make at lease minimum wage or more. Provide hands on training with adaptive equipment.

We make our money the old fashioned way we earn it. Almost 100% of our revenue is from the sale of products that we make or package. We do not receive funds from the Federal Government or the State of Texas.

70% of blind people are unemployed in the United States and we want to change that. We provide part-time employment and job training for local high school students that are visually impaired.

Four Employees Door-to-door sales of mops and brooms made at the Dallas Lighthouse In the 60’s and 70’s the Lighthouse also provided chair caning, opened a rummage store, yarn mill and rehab services. Lighthouse Opens Doors in August 1963

Lighthouse Takes a New Direction In 1974 we purchased Duro-Ad Pen Co. from Magic Marker and started producing writing instruments. The yarn mill, rummage store, rehab services, mop and caning operations were closed. In 1978 we moved to our present location on Austin Street. Texas State Use Program started in 1978.

The majority of our sales are to the State of Texas and the Federal Government.

We assemble and package over 25 different types of pens, highlighters, markers and pencils.

Some of these writing instruments have up to 8 separate parts that are all assembled by hand and touch. We sell close to Three Million writing instruments per year.

We customize many different styles of pens. The SKILCRAFT logo is our trademark. When you see this logo the product was made by the blind and visually impaired.

We make two pens for the prison industry. Bend EZ Flexible Prison Pen Today we sell over one million of these pens to jails and prisons all over the United States.

The primary location for the assembly of the Bend EZ is in our Abilene facility.

We assemble and package all of our products. Blister Packaging Correction Tape is one of these products.

All of our highlighters are assembled by hand and we manually inject the ink into each highlighter.
