Engineers made bridges and train tracks out of steel and iron. People in towns needed coal for fires. People in towns needed new jobs.Work: Work Many children worked from the age of four. Some boys worked as climbing boys crawling up chimneys to sweep soot. Little children worked as trappers down mines. Some children crawled under machines to clean floors.Schools: Schools Classrooms had high windows so the Children couldn't look out. Children sat in rows of three and wrote on slates with a slate pencil. Classrooms had bare walls.Schools: Schools Rich children were taught by a governess. Older boys went to private school. Older girls learned singing and sewing. Older boys learned Latin and sport.Homes: Homes Poor people lived in small terraced houses. The houses were back-to-back. Several families got water from a pump. The houses were very crowded. Several families shared outside toilets.Homes: Homes Rich people lived in big houses. Each family had their own house. Some houses had inside bathrooms and flushing toilets. Some houses had lots of rooms. They had gas lights instead of candles.Changes: Changes Lots of things changed for the better. Towns and cities got street lamps and sewers underground. Factory owners built new houses with outside toilets. Towns and cities had new pavements.Changes: Changes Lord Shaftesbury helped climbing boys and children in the coal mines. Dr Barnardo rescued children from the streets and built homes for orphans. These two men helped make new laws which improved life for children.Toys: Toys Poor children had only a few toys. Some children made spinning tops. Outside they played football in the street and blind man's buff. Some girls had rag dolls.Toys: Toys Rich children had many toys. Girls played with dolls with china heads and rocking horses.
