Students Curriculum: Computer Assisted English Language Learning Keywords: Classical music, Pop-music, Pop-cultureIntroduction: Introduction Music is generally divided into two genres (categories) : classical and popular. In the two categories there are discernible differences. At the same time there are overlaps of certain features within the two. The purpose of this web quest is for you to be familiar with the two and identify the differences, similarities and boundaries between the two and develop a discussion on the topic. While doing the tasks you will see your English language skills; listening, reading, speech and writing improve.Tasks: Tasks Prepare a PowerPoint presentation to present the findings ( Refer to Process (slide 04) for more details) 1. Briefly write one definition for classical music and pop music each. 2. Attach a video clip of an example of a song of classical and pop music category each. Below each URL of the video on the PowerPoint slide briefly write what that music/song is about (or the theme). 3. Find five new words from the songs and look up their meanings in an online dictionary and write the meanings. 4. Write short biographies of two famous classical music and Pop music artists. These should include; the names of the artists, one photo of the artists, time (birthday and (if not living) day of death), names of five famous or popular songs or symphonies by the artists, common theme/s found in the songs, something interesting about the life of each artist. ( do not use the photos of the artists in the first page of these slides) 5. Briefly compare and contrast the characteristics/qualities of each genre( category) of music and write them in sentence form (08-10 points for both)Process: Process Work in groups of 05 You can use a computer and internet at home or in the university to complete the project Addresses of some useful websites are given on the resources page (slide 6). You can use your own searches. Give a list of references of the URLs of all the websites you used for your answers. Each group has to make a 15 minutes group PowerPoint presentation of their findings. Presentations are due by the week after the next at the same time on the same day of the week you have your class ( you have two weeks) Other groups will evaluate your presentations based on the Rubrics for evaluation.
