CANINE FLU ALERT Symptoms can include coughing, fever and nasal discharge, and may last from 1 to 3 weeks.
The disease is transmitted by infected dogs coughing and sneezing in close contact with other dogs, most typically in crowded places like shelters, kennels and animal hospitals.

CANINE FLU ALERT Treatment is symptomatic, much like the human flu: stay at home, drink plenty of fluids, don’t go out playing and avoid contact with other dogs.
Fatality rates range from 1% to 10% of cases, and tend to be greatest in puppies or very old dogs, or dogs with weak immune systems.

CANINE FLU ALERT Because it is a virus, there is no vaccine available.
Most dogs on the Peninsula are well cared for and otherwise healthy, but they could still get the flu if they come in contact with dogs new to the area that are ill.
