The Servant of the Lord Isaiah 42:1-7 Nanjing International Christian Fellowship 02 Dec 2007

Slide2:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord 1 "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. 3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; 4 he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope." Isaiah 42:1-4 NIV

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord My chosen one in whom I delight “Understanding this helps us to receive God's favor, instead of trying to give Him a reason to delight His soul in us! Many of us are trying to earn the approval of God, instead of realizing it is His free gift, received by faith, because He has chosen - elected - to delight His soul in us.” -David Guzik

Slide8:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord 5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8And being found in appearance as a man,  he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! Phil. 2:5-8

Slide9:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus Phil. 2:3-5

Slide10:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord 25Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Matt. 20:25-28

Slide11:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord 12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. John 13:12-17

Slide12:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord   23Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. 25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? Luke 9:23-25

Slide13:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord Just as Jesus poured his heart into eleven ordinary men who shook the world, the church has impact today only as ordinary believers are equipped for the work of ministry and touch others in their daily lives.

Slide14:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord 21"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' Matthew 25:21 NIV

Slide15:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord 5 This is what God the LORD says— he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 6 "I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand.  I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. Isaiah 42:5-7 NIV

Slide16:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Luke 12:37 NIV

Slide17:

Isaiah 42 The Servant of the Lord Summary: God calls us to serve. God delights in us. God sustains us in His power. We must be faithful in our service to Him.
