RECR 330 Program Plan

Tacoma Mountaineers Alpine Course: 

Tacoma Mountaineers Alpine Course Open to all genders and ages Open to all climbing levels (beginner-advanced) No prior knowledge needed Eight week course-Starts May 8th 2007 Course ends June 31st 2007

Target Audience: 

Target Audience The target audience is geared towards young adults (18-25) living in the North-end of Tacoma. Tacoma area is in need of more outdoor recreational opportunities for young adults. By targeting young adults, the course will not only reach out and engage others in the outdoors, but challenge them out of the norm.

Program Description: 

Program Description Eight week course will cover skills such as Navigation, Crevasse Rescue, Safety and Survival Skills, Basic Mountaineering Skills, First Aid and CPR. 6 Weekend trips, including two hikes and one mini-climb Two-day climb of Mt. Rainier at completion of program (June 30-31)

Guide Requirements: 

Guide Requirements Guides must be experienced in Medical Training, Avalanche Awareness, Crevasse and Rope and Rescue Training, and Leave no Trace. Must have a passion for climbing and the outdoors. Must display good leadership and communication skills

Program Goals: 

Program Goals Provide clientele with the safest experience possible. Encourage them to respect and understand the Northwest’s unique alpine environment. Educate clientele through the adventures of mountaineering, and Offer the most enjoyable alpine experience possible.

Program Costs & Publication: 

Program Costs & Publication $1500 per person The alpine course will be based off of the time duration (8 weeks) and the coverage of the equipment/ supplies. Publication of the course will be thru ads displayed in clubs, work sites, gyms, and other recreational settings (such as the YMCA) to target the young adults interested in other recreational activities.

Program Evaluation: 

Program Evaluation Program evaluations will be distributed to each client after the summit climb is complete. Questionnaire of 10 questions will be on the evaluation. Client will critique the program, from the course skills and training leading up to the climb, to weekend outings, to the guide(s) leadership, knowledge and communication skills.
