Slide2 : Welcome to Roscoe Wilson Magnet Elementary School where we are eagerly working towards Lassoing A Great Year in 2007-2008!
As the Lubbock Independent School District celebrates 100 years of Education, we, as Wranglers, take pride in our school, where almost 67 years ago, children and their parents, in what used to be southwest Lubbock , watched with eager anticipation as the beautiful building was completed and opened in January of 1940. Named Roscoe Wilson Elementary School, the building had 8 classrooms for 270 students.
Today well over 400 strong, we cherish the rich, history, tradition and diversity of our school and what those things bring to our students, their families and our community.
We study and honor Mr. Roscoe Wilson by remembering and reading about this outstanding man who is remembered for his “sense of honor,” “absolute unshakable integrity,” “unbounded love for his fellow man,” and “encouragement and unselfishness toward others”. We will speak of him often as “Wranglers” and practice the fine qualities that Mr. Wilson is remembered for in striving to become better students and citizens and exceptional Wranglers.
This year we will implement Our Positive Behavior Support System, in which we will seek to catch all Wranglers wearing their “CHAPS”. Symbolizing CHARACTER, HONOR, ACHIEVEMENT, PRIDE, SAFETY , SECURITY, and SUCCESS. We invite all parents to join us each day in “getting your “CHAPS” on!
We look forward as a Roscoe Wilson Family in learning and working together to Lasso a Great Year in 2007-2008!
Go Wranglers!

When Daddy Carves the Turkey
When Daddy carves the turkey, It is really quite a sight,
I know he tries his hardest, But he never does it right.
He makes a fancy show of it, Before he starts to carve,
And stabs in all directions, While we're certain that we'll starve.
He seems to take forever, As we sit and shake our heads,
By the time he's finished slicing, He's reduced the birds to shreds.
He yells as loud as thunder, Just before he's finally through
For when Daddy carves the turkey, Daddy carves his finger too!

31 New Years Eve Snowman Rice Crispy Treats
A creative snack recipe! Make a snowman using the popular crispy rice cereal bar recipe.
INGREDIENTS:
3 Tbls Butter or Margarine * 4 cups Miniature Marshmallows * 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
4 cups Crispy Rice Cereal * Frosting * Decorating Items (listed below)
PREPARATION:
Melt butter or margarine over low heat in a large saucepan or in the microwave in a large bowl. Add vanilla and marshmallows. Pop back in the microwave for 30 second intervals until marshmallow are melted, stir between each interval.
Or, if making it on the stove, keep over low heat, stirring constantly until marshmallows are melted. Bend well. Add the crispy rice cereal and stir until the cereal is coated.
Line a large cookie sheet with wax paper. As soon as the marshmallow is cool enough to touch, rub a little margarine or butter on your hands and form the cereal mixture into balls. Work quickly so your rice cereal mixture stays warm.
You will need 2 balls for each snowman. Use about 1 cup of the mixture for the body and 3/4 cup for the head balls. Set your larger ball on the wax paper lined cookie sheet. Place the small ball on top of the larger ball. If necessary, use a dab of frosting to help the 2 balls stick together.
Now you are ready to decorate your snowman! Use frosting to help some items stick to the rice cereal balls better. Here are some suggestions for items to use to give your snowman facial features and more.
Raisins (eyes, nose, mouth, buttons, etc.) Red Hots (eyes, nose, mouth, buttons, etc.)
M and M's (eyes, nose, mouth, buttons, etc.) Large Gum Drops (hat)
Chocolate Chips (eyes, nose, mouth, buttons, etc.) Pretzel Sticks (Arms)
Tiny Jelly Beans (eyes, nose, mouth, buttons, etc.)
Let the snowmen set for a few hours and enjoy!

How to Make a Time Capsule
Materials Needed: Coffee Can or a Large Jar Many Miscellaneous Items
Instructions: Creativity is the key here. You are going to use the coffee can or a large bottle to make a time capsule to hide away. Use paint and/or construction paper to decorate the outside of the coffee can. You can try to make a special design... Confetti and a large 2008 would be fun, or how about fireworks, or a clock? One thing for sure you should include on the outside of your 'time capsule' is 2008 to commemorate the new year. You probably will want to write a small note to whomever might find your time capsule. Something along the lines of "Do Not Open Until January 1st 2028" or whatever year you choose.
Once you are done designing your Time Capsule, find some special items to place inside it.
Some personal items such as a few pictures would be nice. You might also want to include items that are popular these days. How about a few Pokemon cards or a token of some other hot trend. You can clip out a few important news stories also. Another fun idea is to record one of your favorite songs and place the tape in your time capsule. It would also be fun to write a letter to whomever finds and opens your time capsule. Tell them about yourself, your family, etc. Include a picture too, if you can. Can you come up with any other fun ideas? Finally, once you have your time capsule filled, use glue or tape to 'seal' the top closed. Last of all, you need to find a safe hiding place for your time capsule. Hopefully someplace where no one will find it for quite awhile.

Math Game
Instructions for making a fun math game using an empty film container
Materials Needed:
Film Container
10 Beans
Paint
Misc Items to Decorate Container
Instructions:
Let the kids decorate the film container. Possibilities include wigglely eyes and some felt to make feet, arms, and a hat. Have available lace, material scraps, and other desired craft items.
Paint the beans with one color on one side and the other side with another color. Let the paint dry and then place the beans in the film container.
To play the game: Place the lid on the container or your hand over the top, gently shake up the beans, and then dump them out.
Separate the beans by color and create an addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problem using the given numbers. Example: 3 red beans + 7 blue beans = ?. Excellent way to practice math. You can also have your students estimate how many times a certain problem will be rolled out of 10 shakes. Create fractions from the bean numbers rolled: 4 red beans and 6 blue beans = 4/6. Can it be reduced? Many options with this game!
