Cotton Response to Starter Fertilization from Better Crops 1993/94 78(1):9-11 Significant increases in lint yields were observed in 13 of 18 locations in Mississippi in three years of field trials In Alabama, surface-banding N-P starter significantly increased yield at one of 16 field locations over a two-year period In North Carolina, 2x2-inch band application of starter significantly increased yield at four locations during a two-year period.

Considerations and Precautions on Starter Fertilizer Applications for Cotton Starter systems used for cotton in the South are: 2 x 2 inch below and to the side of the seed furrow 3 to 4-inch band over the planted row in-furrow with the seed Researchers suggest no more than 1.5 gpa of 10-34-0 or 11-37-0 in-furrow for cotton, to avoid seedling injury. Rates of these products at 2 to 4 gpa or more have sometimes resulted in cotton seedling injury and stand reduction In-furrow application of more than 10 to 12 lb/A of N, or N plus K2O, could result in seedling injury Do not use urea-containing N sources or sources that form ammonia (such as diammonium phosphate (DAP)) in direct contact with seed
