The Zoological Survey of India Founded : 1916 Premier National Institute Deciphering Faunal Diversity of India Headquarter : Kolkata 16 Regional Centers in States of the country representing diverse ecosystems and Biogeographic Zones.

The Zoological Survey of India Largest repository of Type Specimens . National Zoological Collection. This comprises more than two million specimen of nearly sixty thousand species, including fifteen thousand type specimens from India and abroad. More than three hundred specialists are working on almost all groups of animals.

Convention on Biological Diversity (Rio, 1992) Article 5: Cooperation: ZSI offers services for assessment of Faunal Diversity to many Asian countries; Article 7:Identification & Monitoring: Has 16 Regional Station all over the country with HQ at Calcutta; Article 8:In-Situ Conservation: Provides base line data on the faunal resources of the country; Article 10: Sustainable use of Components of Bio-diversity: Provides regular services under CITES Article 12: Research and Training: Explores, identifies and describes large number of new taxon of fauna; Article 14: Impact Assessment: Undertakes EIA services with special reference to faunal resources; Article 17: Exchange of Information: Provides a large series of reference Publications; Article 18: Technical & Scientific Cooperation: Provides the nodal point for assessment of faunal diversity and creation of network among SAARC countries.
