Technological Progression:

Technological Progression Most of technologies are regarded to follow S curve of evolution & growth. In the beginning rate of innovation is higher and thereafter it slows down gradually. Meanwhile a new technology evolves, and displaces the older technology.

Disruptive Innovations Radical innovations usually occur when major improvement occurs in performance characteristics of a technology or when there is shift / movement from one technology regime to another technology regime. An extreme form of radical innovation is Disruptive Technology / Innovation.

Technicism i.e. new forms of danger come into existence as a consequence of development of new forms of technology.

Disruptive technologies & innovations are not always immediately disruptive, and often these take a long time before they become significantly disruptive to established organizations & their products. Example: Evolution of Automobiles.

Demand for older technology based products may decline significantly, but still small demand continues. Example: Small use of bias ply tyres for passenger-car still continues

Business Implications 2.e. Workforce of the existing firm is adversely affected through lower / nil bonuses & growth avenues, delayed salary payments, retrenchment, poor re-employment opportunities due to older skills; and resultant industrial and social problems.

While sustaining innovations support the organizations in fighting & surviving the competition, such a competitive advantage may not be of long-term nature and may easily be lost to some technology leader, pace setter & aggressive competitor.

Managing Technological Change Disruptive technologies usually take long time to develop & strengthen. Existing firms must monitor these developments continuously. Existing firms must improve their existing technologies and continue to push technological demands in their core market so that performance stays above what disruptive technologies can achieve. They need to nurture culture of continuous learning & upgradation in the organization.

Managing Technological Change However if existing firm fails to take above steps, then the laggard / existing firm hit by technology disruption, can at best fend off the market share attack by imitation / copying, for which survival (not thriving) may be the only reward.

Conclusion Focus on gaining competitiveness through sustaining innovations is important but not a guarantee for long term survival of an organization. Disruptive innovations can hurt successful, well managed companies even though these organizations may be responsive to their customers and they may have excellent research and development. Organizations & Managers should not only focus on competition (pure customer orientation), they should also keep a watch over emerging disruptive technology & innovations.
