Let us be planning to make the coming session one of greatest good!” Slide 6: Of course, many came before that class and many more have come in the meantime. Slide 15: Civil War leaves college damaged and bankrupt. Baker elected president in 1869. Began 10-month trip on horseback, recruiting students and raising enough money to save the college. His journey of 3500 miles is roughly equivalent to a trip to Juneau, Alaska. For his heroic efforts, the Baker Building is named in his honor. Rev. I usually sat under the balcony, but that day [my boyfriend] was out of town, and I sat with some friends in the center section. There was a loud pop, and then it just started slowly sliding down. The rail fell on the organ right in front of the organist. The people underneath the balcony crawled under the pews. There was only one injury: a student broke her collar bone when she jumped from the balcony.” Slide 19: People Sinkhole at former baseball field. Slide 20: “It started out about eight feet across. Guys were daring each other to jump it. Slide 22: John Wittig, class of 1965 National champion debater Editor of The Orange and Blue In 1963 wrote a series of editorials challenging CN’s policy of segregation Office was smeared with red and black paint Someone painted ‘n***** lover’ on his dorm door He was spat upon An administrator asked him what it would take to get the editorials to stop; he said, “Admit black students.” And then… Slide 23: … in 1964, Carson-Newman integrated. And by the early 1970s, an African-American was elected “Joe College.” Slide 24: Henderson Hall Fire--1974 Slide 25: “The morning after the fire, [the academic dean] sent me to the science building to look for vacant classrooms. I was walking through the building and [a now deceased science professor] asked me what I was doing. When I told him, he asked why we needed more rooms than we had at Henderson. The fog had been so thick that morning, he had not even seen that Henderson had burned. When I took him outside and showed him, boy, did he ever apologize.” Eyewitness, Dr. Bill Blevins, class of 1959 Former Chair of Religion Dept. He screamed ‘YES!’ I ran to Burnett, which was being evacuated, and got her keys. Just as I started the car the church’s windows exploded out over the car. That little Impala never did zero to 60 so fast. A little later I was standing on the front lawn of Swann when there was a loud bang. People started screaming as the steeple fell into the building and the columns fell out toward the street. Mother died; reclaimed by violent, drunken father. When he was a student, Carson College for Men and Newman College for Women merged. Students held a “wedding” and Hooper played the part of the minister. Two-term governor of Tennessee during Prohibition; passed child labor laws. Appointed by Pres. Harding to mediate major railroad dispute. Credited with averting major economic disaster.
