VIU’s Programs Master’s Degrees Students will take twelve (12) courses Includes a practical training course Students benefit from a broad range of teaching and specialization skills in areas of interest Graduate Certificates Students will take six (6) courses Includes a practical training course

Master’s Programs:

Master’s Programs Master of Education Obtain a strong foundation in learning and teaching principles and practices Gain content expertise in specific areas of interest (math, science or ESOL) Learn general teaching and learning principles across the learner’s lifespan Specialize in technology, curriculum/instruction/assessment, or leadership and policy

Master’s Programs Master of Arts in TESOL Obtain a foundation in language teaching and learning principles across the learner's lifespan Gain sound knowledge in language theory and second language acquisition (SLA) Develop curriculum based upon language learning needs and requirements Specialize in content area teaching, specialized teaching methods, management focused courses and intercultural or sociolinguistic focused

Program Concentration in Education The School of Education at VIU is designed to prepare future educators for leading roles in the growing field of education. Graduates from the Education programs will be able to effectively address challenges and possibilities in their roles as successful teachers, educators, and leaders of their communities worldwide.

Education Program Mission The Mission of the Education program at Virginia International University is to enable professional educators to effectively serve in culturally diverse and technologically enhanced educational environments by empowering them with the skills and attributes associated with problem solvers, critical thinkers, and scholars in order to facilitate learning and academic achievement for secondary students others they may serve.

Program Concentration in TESOL:

Program Concentration in TESOL VIU’s MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program prepares its students to work as English teachers in a world where the global need for English language skills is growing. Upon successful completion of the program, students will have a solid linguistic and pedagogical base for teaching English to speakers of other languages. Students will also gain valuable classroom experience through observation and supervised teaching.

Throughout the course, students will build a professional teaching portfolio used as the final requirement for graduation from the program Produce a summative portfolio
