CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

TYPE 1: 

TYPE 1 ♣ → It is possible and also very likely that the condition will be fulfilled. Form: IF + Simple Present , will-Future Will-future IF Simple Present (no ,) Example: If you eat junk food, you will get fat. You will get fat if you eat junk food.

■ We may use unless instead of if: UNLESS + Affirmative Present Simple, WILL = IF + Negative Present Simple, WILL ■ We may use when, provided that, as long as, before instead of if: Example: When I am old, I will wear purple. 1 in 3 people will have cancer before they grow old.

TYPE 2: 

TYPE 2 ♣ → It is possible, but very unlikely , that the condition will be fulfilled. Form: IF + Simple Past , WOULD+Infinitive Example: If you studied harder, you would pass. ■ We use WERE instead of WAS (formal): If I WERE you, I would quit.

TYPE 3: 

TYPE 3 ■ → It is impossible that the condition will be fulfilled. ■ Form: IF + Past Perfect, WOULD HAVE + past participle ■ Example: If I had gone to London, I would have visited the National Gallery.
