Allows for easy end user interaction

Using PEbuilder (window pre-installation environment).
Using MS Virtual PC
Using MS Windows XP as the guest OS in VPC.

We can use plug-ins to install Virtual PC and then use the guest OS.

BartPE and Microsoft WinPE? : BartPE and Microsoft WinPE? Target - Microsoft sees Windows PE as an installation platform. Bart sees Windows PE as the next generation rescue platform.
Start-menu - Bart's builder gives you a simple, dynamic and powerful start-menu (Nu2Menu, see screenshots). Microsoft's builder does not give you a start-menu, it uses a command prompt.
Build from - Bart's builder can also build from Windows XP Home Edition or from a preinstalled Windows XP version (without CD).
Plugins - With PE Builder you can easily add applications, drivers or tools using plugins. This makes PE Builder extremely powerful. The end user can even combine plugins from different software vendors into one CD image.
Network support - PE Builder includes its own network support tools (bartpe/penetcfg) to start TCP/IP and Microsoft Client. The TCP/IP settings like: dynamic/static ip-address, subnet-mask, default gateway, dns-servers computer-name, workgroup can be changed on-the-fly. You can create pre-defined profiles, that you can select. Microsoft winPE only supports DHCP or fixed settings using winbom.ini. Also there is a plugin (NwDskPe) created by Erwin Veermans that loads the Netware Client on BartPE (IP/IPX).
Fileshare - BartPE can start File Sharing support so you can connect to the system through a share.
VNC - Because of the File Sharing support you can also run UltraVNC.
Dos support - Bart's builder has a plugin called "dospe".
License - Microsoft WinPE is only for Enterprise/OEM customers (see previous), BartPE is for everybody!
64-Bit - Bart's builder does not support Windows 64-bit editions.
Requirements to build: : Requirements to build: The files from your Windows Installation CD-Rom. Supported Windows versions are:
Windows XP Home Edition (must be slip streamed with Service Pack 1 or higher)
Windows XP Professional (must be slip streamed with Service Pack 1 or higher)
Windows Server 2003, Web Edition
Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
PE Builder runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003/BartPE systems.
CD/DVD writer if you want to creat a bootable CD/DVD.
Key plug-ins : Key plug-ins XPE by Sherpya
XPE AutoRamDiskResizer
XPE Ram Disk (qsoft)
XPE NU2MENU Shortcuts converter (Will not work with ram drive version)
Drivers for Network Cards and sound cards if desired.
HWpnp by Paraglider
MMC plug-in
PENETCFG AutoStart by “The Truth”
PENETCFG Network configurator also by “The Truth”
MS Virtual PC I created this one myself using “plug-in builder”
Demo : Demo Building / Using PEbuilder
Booting to CD-ROM , USB, or hard disk drive.
Your pc must be enable to Boot to alternate source through the BIOS
USB hard disk emulation is better but not required.
USB 1.1 and 2.0 are supported but 2.0 is preferred.
Building / Using Pebuilder cont… : Building / Using Pebuilder cont… USB 1.1 VS 2.0
Found that using USB 2.0 is better overall performance and usability.
1.1 will work ok, but doesn’t really have the potential for the workplace.
Some 1.1 USB controllers reset themselves while booting causing blue screen.
Considerations for USB 1.1 and 2.0 : Considerations for USB 1.1 and 2.0 Pe2USB.exe, a windows program that will install/copy BartPE to USB.
This is used for USB 2.0 controllers that can emulate HD
Works best with the T43 Thinkpad and is relatively speedy.
Pe2USB.cmd is a script that loads the BartPE files and then loads a RAM drive configuration to boot from.
Uses the Ram disk as the loading drive to avoid the Blue screen when the USB device resets itself.
Uses files from Windows 2003 service pack 1 files to create the RAMdisk
Lightning fast once the OS loaded no matter 1.1 or 2.0.
Must have at least 512 or higher memory for the RAM disk and BartPE.
Demo: : Demo: Using Pe2USB.exe and Pe2USB.cmd
Using VPC : Using VPC If all has successfully built and copied to USB or CD then use VPC to launch the guest OS.
The guest OS will need a Virtual Disk which can be quite large.
I used a USB Hard Drive with 2 partitions. 1 partition is 1 gig with the BartPE installation, and the 2nd is NTFS and about 10 gigs of free space.
Save your VPC session and the VD will keep getting bigger.
