Non-linear PowerPoint Presentations :

Non-linear PowerPoint Presentations By Elsie, Nancy & Mary-Ann

Introduction :

Introduction We have decided to demonstrate our instructional strategy in our presentation Elsie will start us off with an overview of Non-linear Presentations Mary-Ann will explain how this strategy could be used within an online course Finally, Nancy will discuss the relevant learning theory and rationale

The Course

Potential Online Course :

Potential Online Course EDUA 1800 – Psychology of Learning and Instruction 1: Theory and Practice This is a required course for all students in the Bachelor of Education Program

Slide 5:

Learning Theory

Constructivism :

Constructivism Constructivists assert that knowledge is learned, and changes in knowledge make changes in behaviour possible People are seen as active learners who initiate experiences, seek out information to solve problems, and reorganize what they already know to achieve new insights

Constructivism :

Constructivism Instead of being passively influenced by environmental events, people actively choose, practice, pay attention, ignore, reflect, and make many other decisions as they pursue goals Knowledge is constructed rather than acquired

Rationale

NLP & Constructivism :

NLP & Constructivism Constructivist educators encourage and accept student autonomy and initiative Constructivist educators use raw data and primary sources along with interactive materials NLP enables educators to incorporate these constructivist practices into an online course

Types of Interaction - Moore :

Types of Interaction - Moore NLP provide a means for the learner to interact with the content Encourages student initiative and more active student participation  stimulate/maintain interest in content and motivate students Could facilitate learner-instructor and learner-learner interaction

Instructional Strategy

What is NLP? :

What is NLP? Non-linear PowerPoint (NLP) enables the creation of a more engaging and interesting presentation A built-in navigation scheme provides students control over the content and the sequence in which they view it

How NLP Works :

How NLP Works Essentially you link or branch slides to one another to create an interactive presentation

Steps to Create a NLP :

Steps to Create a NLP Organize your content Plan your presentation Design the learner interface Create the master slides Populate with content

Organizing Your Content :

Organizing Your Content Begin by thinking about the content and the best way to present it to the learner Make a list of the content and look for natural division points Consider what external resources (video, documents, websites) you want to include

Planning the Presentation :

Planning the Presentation

Designing the Interface :

Designing the Interface The learner interface is comprised of a navigation scheme, buttons with links and a means of presenting content Make several sketches and choose a simple interface

Creating the Master Slides :

Creating the Master Slides The learner interface controls are usually built into the Master Slides in a presentation

Other Options :

Other Options Creating a NLP from scratch does require more advanced PPT knowledge Templates are available which require minor editing of the Master Slides Courses are available at the University of Manitoba and there are online tutorials Linking presentations can be created by beginner presentation authors
