Slide2:

Have you ever been to the Great Wall of China?

Slide3:

Have you ever been to the Great Wall of China? Yes, I have.

Slide4:

If you have, what do you think of it?

Slide5:

If you have, what do you think of it? It’s one of the greatest human creations. It is so amazing that I can hardly believe my ancestors created it without modern scientific equipment.

Slide6:

If you haven’t, do you want to visit it someday? Why or why not?

Slide7:

If you haven’t, do you want to visit it someday? Why or why not? (1) Yes, I would like to, because it is said to be one of the world’s wonders. I wish to witness the grandeur of the Great Wall during my lifetime.

Slide8:

(2) I don’t want to visit mainland China. I’ve been told that the local people are greedy and selfish and, besides, all the historic sites have been badly damaged. I have no interest in raveling to China to see its historic sites.

Slide9:

If you travel in space and look down on the earth, there is only one man-made structure that you can see. That structure is the Great Wall of China. It is the longest structure in the world.

Slide10:

The Great Wall is also one of the oldest structures on earth. Originally, it was a series of separate walls extending across northern China. In 221 B.C., Chin Shih-huang began to connect these separate walls into one long wall. Later, he extended it to a length of 1,900 kilometers.

Slide11:

In the following centuries, other emperors continued to extend the wall until it reached more than 3,000 kilometers. Today, it is about 2,400 kilometers long. It is five to eight meters wide and five to nine meters high. The wall is made of brick, earth, and stone.

Slide12:

The Great Wall was originally intended for military purposes. Chin Shih-huang began to build it after he had united the different parts of China into one country. He wanted to protect his new country against enemies from the north.

Slide13:

When the enemy soldiers arrived on their horses, the wall would hold them back. This would give the Chinese time to bring their own soldiers to the wall to fight the enemy.

Slide14:

The wall also included many watchtowers. From these, soldiers could see the enemy coming from far away. The soldiers in the towers also sent signals to each other, using smoke during the daytime and fire at night.

Slide15:

Today, the Great Wall is still the longest structure in the world. But it cannot really protect the Chinese from the airplanes and high-tech weapons of a modern invading army. Instead, it is invaded by tourists from all around the world. They come not with weapons, but with cameras.

Slide16:
