Tudor House Reading Challenge:

Tudor House Reading Challenge Space Ships Planets Rockets Adventure Theme

Research::

Research: Readers are more likely to consolidate their literacy and overall academic achievements. Ten minutes daily reading will make a difference. School opportunities and home opportunities. School Class Library + extra Library time Library open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime Increasing numbers using this time Thursday Library Monitors reading to younger boys Planning - parents as partners in reading

I want to do more!:

I want to do more! If learning is fun and meaningful, deeper learning will result. Library as a place of learning is a fun place to be, but I want to make it even better. A personal goal for me this year is to increase the total borrowing of all our boys. This will have many ‘flow on’ effects for our boys.

How to Help Make it Happen:

How to Help Make it Happen Create reading ‘planets’ ( year /stage groups ) with different ‘rocket ships’ as ( reading levels ).

Assistance to Achieve Goals:

Assistance to Achieve Goals A program that ideally links into our existing library software. A program that can absorb all our current and future reading materials and ‘measure’ them into reading abilities.

Achieving the goals::

Achieving the goals: Several programs out there, free ones are American, thus not good for our learning. I have researched and compared s everal that are available and suitable on the current market.

Achieving the goals::

Achieving the goals: Accelerated Reader It is an exciting online program that we can incorporate our planet and rocket ship ideas. It will complement our current Mastery Teaching program.

Accelerated Reader Program::

Accelerated Reader Program: About Accelerated Reader AR is a program that gives students the opportunity to read for enjoyment and to earn points for recognition and receive certificate rewards as well. The program is based on the principle that practice improves reading. Research has shown that most growth occurs when children are reading in their comfort zone – books that are not too easy and not too hard.

Accelerated Reader:

Accelerated Reader Initially: Children are allocated a reading range through an online reading test called the STAR reading test. Students select books that are on the AR reading list. After reading the book, the student takes a multiple-choice comprehension test.  This also assures that our readers are achieving metacognitively. In many of these there is a vocabulary component as well based on the book content. The computer scores the test and awards the student points based on the results, and keeps a complete record of their achievements.

Achievement in the School Setting:

Achievement in the School Setting ...the most powerful single moderator that enhances achievement is feedback.  The most simple prescription for improving education must be "dollops of feedback. ” Hattie, J. 1992:4

Accelerated Reader:

Accelerated Reader Students select their own books and read at their own pace and may take tests on these books or others that are read to them. Having the option to take a quiz on books read with a parent or fellow student (or Library Monitors) may be helpful for reluctant readers. After completing a quiz, each student will receive a report called a TOPS Report ( The Opportunity to Praise Students ) that gives immediate feedback to students, teachers and parents and shows cumulative data.

Accelerated Reader Home Connect:

Accelerated Reader Home Connect Home Connect (Part of AR Program) Home Connect links the reading program to the home environment allowing parents to continue the positive experience of successful reading practice. All students have their own Home Connect space, allowing them to see how they scored on their last quiz and find the results on all quizzes. The easy-to-read format allows students to see their progress towards Goals and Certificates instantly. Students can also see all the books they have read on an attractive and colourful online bookshelf.

Accelerated Reader:

Accelerated Reader There are thousands of quizzes on AR and our library will not house every possible book. Students may take a quiz on books they own or books they have borrowed from other libraries. Quizzes may only be taken at school so when using a book from another source other than our school library, a student should bring the completed book to school, or write the title and author in their diary.
