Slide 1:

THIS IS SPARTA! THIS IS SPARTA! The two Greek city-states that historians know the most about are Athens and Sparta. Like most city-states they had a lot in common. However, the way people lived in these two powerful cities differed a great deal. A I M : T H I S I S S P A R T A !

SPARTA :

SPARTA 700 B.C.E. Much of southern Greece was controlled by the Spartans. Sparta’s major city was located 30 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. A low mountain nearby formed Sparta’s acropolis. Near this was the polis agora. KEY WORD: ACROPOLIS A large hill used for shelter and safety in times of war. KEY WORD: POLIS A term used to describe a Greek city-state. KEY WORD: AGORA A marketplace or meeting place. The agora polis is where the leaders of Sparta would meet to make important decisions. Sparta’s largest city was actually a collection of over a dozen small villages. A I M : T H I S I S S P A R T A !

AGORA :

AGORA Farmers gathered at Sparta’s agora to do business. Most of the farm workers were slaves. Sparta had more slaves than any other city-state. At some points there were seven slaves for every one Spartan! Around 600 B.C.E. the slaves of Sparta, known as Helots, revolted! The Spartan polis leaders set out to make sure this never happened again. A I M : T H I S I S S P A R T A !

POWER :

POWER Spartans dedicated their lives to making their polis strong. Spartan children did their part. At the age of seven, boys & girls began training. Boys spent time training to be warriors. Girls trained to become strong mothers. Although they spent some time practicing how to read and write most time was spent training for battle! Girls practiced running, throwing spears called javelins, and playing ball games. They did not train to be warriors. A I M : T H I S I S S P A R T A !
