Rejuvenating a Millings Driveway and Street with Hawk Seale Millings Blend:

Rejuvenating a Millings Driveway and Street with Hawk Seale Millings Blend We appreciate being able to share following slides sent to us courtesy of one of our valued customers in Michigan, and we hope that you find this slide show video informative.

Slide2:

Whether using Hot Mix Asphalt or Millings a good base is required as neither provides structural strength. With out a good base your millings roadway will develop failures.

Slide3:

Applying 3 to 5 inches of millings over a good base will create a solid long lasting roadway. A good truck driver can lay a nearly perfect layer of millings reducing the labor and time to spread your millings

Slide4:

You can see all the loose material and channels dug by water coming down the hill. After grading, washouts would happen along the edges at the first rainfall. The neighborhood has fought against these washouts since the 1940’s. After a few hard rains the ruts could be well over 6” deep all along the road.

Slide5:

This is the finished road after applying Hawk Seale Millings blend and re-compacting the millings.

Slide6:

Another view of the finished street after being treated and re-compacted. The surface will also be waterproof which will prevent the moisture from penetrating the surface and protect from freeze thaw cycles that deteriorate asphalt streets

Slide7:

This is a simple and inexpensive sprayer setup constructed with a 2” Trash pump providing a high volume of solution at a low pressure for the boom or a spray wand.

Slide8:

This photo shows the overall simplicity of plumbing. Two Fernco Connecters, Two PVC shut offs and 2” PVC pipe, Tee’s, Elbows, Adaptors and Nozzles

Slide9:

Close up view of pipe from mixing tank to pump. A Fernco connector was used for quick and easy connection

Slide10:

This photos shows return line to mixing tank. Adjusting this valve also controls the pressure to the boom

Slide11:

This 9 foot boom is constructed of 2” PVC Nozzles are 12 inches apart mounted in PVC adaptors for ½” Thread.

Slide12:

1/2” Threaded 80-50 Fan Jet Nozzles from   Etnyre , part number 3351009 or equivalent were installed 12 inches apart providing an over lap of the spray pattern when mounted approximately 16 to 18 inches above the ground.

Slide13:

The 12 inch nozzle spacing worked out perfectly. Here the Hawk Seale Blend solution is being surface applied.

Slide14:

While many of our customers do surface apply our Millings Blend product after compacting the millings We recommend incorporating the Hawk Seale Blend into the top 2 to 3 inches for deeper penetration and a more durable roadway.

Slide15:

We recommend three passes to apply a total of .85 to 1.0 gallons of solution per square yard, which also ensures all areas are adequately covered.

Slide16:

Compaction with a smooth roller is ideal, HawkSeale Blend softens the asphalt in the millings while the copolymers bind the aggregate together to create a smooth durable surface.

Slide17:

We recommend compacting the millings 3 to 4 times in the first 24 hours. Compaction can be done with a heavier smooth tired vehicle as well.

Slide18:

This photo was taken of another 9000 sqft road that our customer re-juvenated with Hawks Seale Blend. Plate compactors can be used in tight spots next to buildings and finishing edges and for small projects

Slide19:

The finished road after compaction is a smooth durable non-tracking and non-washing surface. Initially right after compaction the surface will feel carpet like when walking on it, this will go away as the Hawk Seale cures.

Slide20:

Light traffic can be immediate. Extended parking should be avoided until the millings have fully cured, typically over 7 to 14 days depending on temperature. Colder temperatures (60 degree range) can extend the curing time another week.

Slide21:

Hawk Seale Blend creates water proof surface that will not wash away and will prevent fines from tracking into vehicles and buildings which are the two common drawbacks .
