How can we reduce our energy bill? Which areas of the college are most energy inefficient and what proposals for change would you suggest? :

How can we reduce our energy bill? Which areas of the college are most energy inefficient and what proposals for change would you suggest? By Kanishk Dubey Adrian Lam Charlie Beacroft Alvin Li Kenneth Ho Matthew Common

What uses the most electricity? :

What uses the most electricity? Air conditioners (also when doors/windows are left open Lights Fans Computers Projectors Adaptors Exhaust Fans DT/FT/Cafeteria equipment

What wastes the most Electricity? :

What wastes the most Electricity? Air Conditioners Use 92.76 kwh Uses significantly more than lights Less efficient Lights Not energy saving (fluorescent) light bulb Use 4.67 kwh only

STC’s Electricity Consumption :

STC’s Electricity Consumption

STC’s Electricity Consumption :

STC’s Electricity Consumption $957,682.00 – $789,132.58 = $168,549.42

Solution :

Solution Green Monitor Programme (GMP) Air-Con Off Day (The ACO Day)

Alternative Method Of Energy Saving :

Alternative Method Of Energy Saving Air-Con Off Day Happens every other week Energy units save if air cons turned off = approximately 4 times as much as a normal school day Air cons turned off for one day = 88 kWh Normal school day =333 kWh

Advantages and Disadvantages of the ACO Day :

Advantages and Disadvantages of the ACO Day Advantages: Simple Effective Raises awareness Sustainability Disadvantages: Irritating for students/teachers Won’t have much affect during the winter Environment becomes smelly and unappealing

Green Monitor Programme (GMP) :

Green Monitor Programme (GMP) Years 7’s/8’s become ‘junior green monitors’ They go around designated rooms where they turn off or close: Air-conditioners/Heaters Lights Windows Fans Computers Year 12’s/13’s monitor the junior green monitors, thus becoming ‘senior green monitors’.

Advantages and Disadvantages of GMP :

Advantages and Disadvantages of GMP Advantages Its free and simple. Only a minor commitment for younger students. No additional use of resources. Teaches younger students to take care of their environment and how. Disadvantages Younger students may become difficult. Younger students may not follow the agenda of GMP

Green monitors :

Green monitors Short term basis – volunteer indefinitely Volunteer Programme on a first-come-first serve basis for those who’d like to join Involves mainly Year 7-9’s, Years 10-13 may have exams. Monitor Duties – Long Break and Lunch Time Involves the EAG

GMP Trial Run – Tuesday 29/9/09 :

GMP Trial Run – Tuesday 29/9/09 Groups of students in 7K were assigned as ‘green monitors’ to save electricity in all rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Block 1. 7K’s initiative to the GMP’s intention facilitated the overall process. Students in 7K were supervised by Charlie to ensure that students cooperated with the GMP.

Conclusion :

Conclusion We conclude by saying that Air Conditioners, not lights or anything else, waste the most electricity in the school. Air Conditioners are the most inefficient of all the energy We suggest that either the GMP or/and Air Con Off Day are initiated in order to reduce the amount of energy that is wasted in school.
