Introduction:

Introduction McLaine (2005) Burnout is characterized by as a syndrome which causes emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a decreased feeling of accomplishment as an individual. Loss of motivation and emotional depletion are described by individuals experiencing burnout. An onset of job-related stress is the main cause of burnout.

Definition of Terms:

Definition of Terms Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) An athletic trainer is trained as health care professionals. Job duties include collaboration with physicians to create the best care possible for physically active individuals (National Athletic Trainers’ Association [NATA], 2010). Athletic trainers practice the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. Purpose of Study:

Purpose of Study To investigate the levels and types of burnout in ATCs employed in various settings. Levels and types of burnout will be based on the causes of burnout Caring for athletes Serving as mentor to interns Teaching as you work Communication with coaches, administration, parents, teachers, athletes Physical demands of job

Participants:

Participants N = 10 ATCs (6 male and 4 female) Age range 23-49 years old M = 33.7 Race Caucasian = 4 Hispanic/Latino = 2 Pacific Islander = 2 African American = 1 Asian = 1 Position Head ATC = 8 Assistant ATC = 2 Employment setting High school = 6 Collegiate = 3 Clinic = 1 Years of Experience 1 – 22yrs M = 9.8yrs

Dependent Measure:

Dependent Measure Level and types of Burnout Based on Specific sport Specific responsibility Specific interactions with others Coaches, administration, athletes, parents Level of burnout will be reported on a 1-5 scale Type of burnout will be given through a qualitative measure
