Thinking Allowed! :

Thinking Allowed! Essex EL Conference January 7th 2005

What is it all about?:

What is it all about? Learning that feels real An investigation into an imaginative world A chance for young people to feel the responsibility of being adult without the ‘costs’ and real fall-out. A chance for a classroom to resonate learning. Not being afraid of children.

Why do it?:

Why do it? It sets the learning of the NC in context. So learning makes sense-RELEVANCE. It fits the bill for so many key ‘change agency’ processes-PL/E&E/PS It makes sense to kids and uses engagement as the key. It shifts learning responsibility to the learners

What does it ‘look’ like?:

What does it ‘look’ like? Lets try imagining together! Someone with a genius said once ‘Its not just knowing what to do that counts in life-its knowing what to do WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO that really matters.’

How much do you know?:

How much do you know?

Key ingredients:

Key ingredients There is always an organisation, agency or a company that wears the ‘mantle of expertise’. There is always a ‘client’ who commissions the ‘job/jobs’ to be done. There is always a ‘group/section/department’ in the ‘company’ that ‘does’ the ‘work’ required.

Key long term gains:

Key long term gains Investment in learning through enquiry strategy. Celebrates and honours imagination and creativity Explores ‘values’ and takes time to embed them through deep challenge. Shifts the paradigms of what it means to be ‘literate’. Creates community.

What do people need to try it out?:

What do people need to try it out? A sense of excitement A sense that we will learn by trial and error Seeing and meeting others who are making it work Support and coaching Belief in learning and the power of selective teaching

So what about standards?:

So what about standards? The job of planning doesn’t go. Outcomes? They need to be identified as well as what the tasks are. The ‘standards’ we need to look at are changing- what do the standards look like in the learning we want? AfL is the guide-the PL agenda is here to stay! Sue………..and her ofsted report.

The hidden dimensions:

The hidden dimensions Its about knowing about AT1 English standards Its about thinking deeply and seeking the questions for investigation Its about taking risks and working ‘at risk’ in classrooms. Its about engaging lots of people and using the NC as a back drop. Its about the key skills at the beginning of the NC -where they are meant to be……………………
