Events leading Texas to declare independence Mexico becomes upset at the large number of Americans moving in and their use of slavery, so they begin to ban further immigration of Americans (Anglos) Tejanos became frustrated with the immigrants because they refused to learn to speak Spanish and did not adopt Mexican customs or obey Mexican laws. Mexico outlawed slavery and started collecting taxes from the Texans. Santa Anna proclaims himself dictator of Mexico, so Texans decide it is time to declare their independence on March 2, 1836.

Context Texas has become the 28 th state of America. America believes the border of Texas should be the Rio Grande River. Mexico believes the border should be the Nueces Rives , further north. Polk sends ambassador John Slidell to Mexico to offer $30 million for Texas, California and New Mexico. Mexico denies the offer.
