Two Main Types of Material: 

Two Main Types of Material Fiction (many) Non-Fiction (few) Both may be further divided into genres.

What is a Genre? : 

What is a Genre? A fancy name for a group of books that share: Style Form Content Genres…. Not john rahs

Non-Fiction = Non-Fake: 

Non-Fiction = Non-Fake Based on true known facts Nothing can be made up How-to books, science books, history books, biographies, autobiographies, Non-fiction can be about any subject.

Biography or Autobiography Non-Fiction: 

Biography or Autobiography Non-Fiction Story of a real person’s life. Biography is written by someone else. Autobiography is written by that person.

Narrative Non-Fiction : 

Narrative Non-Fiction Factual information presented in a story format An animal A sport A state or country or planet Many more topics

Informational Non-Fiction: 

Informational Non-Fiction Maps Atlases Almanacs Train schedules Newspapers Magazines Actual real life situations

Fiction = Fake: 

Fiction = Fake May be based on actual events or people. May be based entirely on the author’s imagination. Contain some kind of made up elements.

Realistic Fiction : 

Realistic Fiction Fiction = Fake Modern time, right here and now. Events could really happen.

Mystery: 

Mystery Fiction = Fake Mysterious event not explained Difficult to explain or understand Problem, crime, or problem is solved Secrets or hidden qualities Always solved at the end

Adventure & Suspense: 

Adventure andamp; Suspense Fiction = Fake Rollercoaster ride of thrills Most likely a villain Thriller Mystery, horror, science fiction situations are often in these books too! Reader can expect the worst

Fantasy: 

Fantasy Fiction = Fake Elements that are not real (talking animals, magical powers) Make believe Strange settings

Science Fiction: 

Science Fiction Fiction = Fake Futuristic technology Usually set in the future May be set on another planet Scientific fact and fiction blended

Historical Fiction: 

Historical Fiction Fiction = Fake Takes place in specific time in past (war) Basic setting is real Characters are fiction

Folk Tales, Tall Tales, Fairy Tales: 

Folk Tales, Tall Tales, Fairy Tales Folk Tales- no known creator, passed down by word of mouth. Tall Tale character is bigger in some way (Paul Bunyan) Fairy Tales were created to teach kids behavior in some way with magical features. (Once upon a time,)

Poetry: 

Poetry Verse written to create a response of thought and feeling from the reader. Uses rhythm and rhyme. A form of art in a language Could be non-fiction

Horror: 

Horror Events evoke a feeling of dread in the characters and the reader. Scare or unsettle the reader May have a science fiction and fantasy situation

Drama: 

Drama Usually written in verse or prose Usually for theatrical performances Conflict and emotion are expressed through action and dialog
