Where did evil come from?

Slide2:

This is a study of Hamartiology. Where did evil come from? How did the devil fall? How can God make everything, yet not be “to blame” for the evil?

Slide3:

Last week we explored a few major Truths. Evil is not a thing Evil is not an ability. It’s a corruption of what is good.

Slide4:

Four of God’s Characteristics. God is Good God is Immutable  God is Eternal God is HOLY.  So utterly separate from His creation.

Slide5:

This week All Creation is Obligated, Indebted to Its Creator. God Actively sustains all Creation. God is not obligated to Sustain a Creatures “holiness” yet, a creature remains obligated to its Creator.

Slide6:

All Creation is Obligated, Indebted to Its Creator. The Great Commandment. (all the law and prophets hang on this commandment) [Mat 22:36 ESV] "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" [Mat 22:37 ESV] And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. [Mat 22:38 ESV] This is the great and first commandment.

Slide7:

Remember it’s not the great suggestion It’s not the great calling It’s not the great invitation It’s not the great choice   It is The Commandment of your being . “it’s amazing how our hearts want to retranslate Command into something less . . . commanding.

Slide8:

2 . God is the creator and sustainer of the universe.   God is the Sustainer of ALL THINGS   Referring to Jesus. [ Heb 1:2 ESV] but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. [ Heb 1:3 ESV] He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Slide9:

[Col 1:15 ESV] He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. [Col 1:16 ESV] For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through him and for him. [Col 1:17 ESV] And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.   [Rev 4:11 ESV] "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created."

Slide10:

[Gen 1:1 ESV] In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Slide11:

So how did the devil fall? How did corruption enter the universe?   We humans are already sinful. Adam and Eve did not begin evil. The evil was an outside source. The devil did not begin evil, but “became” evil. How?

Slide12:

Humans: Evil is an Internal Influence [Jas 1:13 ESV] Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. [Jas 1:14 ESV] But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. [Jas 1:15 ESV] Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Slide13:

Adam & Eve: Evil was an External Influence [Gen 3:1 ESV] Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?"

Slide14:

What about angels? The angels fell by an external influence. [ Rev 12:3 ESV] And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. [Rev 12:4 ESV] His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth . And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it.

Slide15:

[2Pe 2:4 ESV] For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; Why not more angels? God preserved them. [1Ti 5:21 ESV] In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality.

Slide16:

The Devil did not begin evil, so how did he fall? [ Eze 28:12 ESV] "Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre , and say to him, Thus says the Lord GOD: "You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. [ Eze 28:13 ESV] You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, sardius , topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle; and crafted in gold were your settings and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared.

Slide17:

[ Eze 28:14 ESV] You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. [ Eze 28:15 ESV] You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you.   That is where most theologians and preachers stop.

Slide18:

How can a creature, in full knowledge of it’s Creator, in full community with it’s Creator, become corrupt?

Slide19:

Here is the connection: God is not obligated to sustain a creatures (“holiness”, place of rightness) BUT a creature remains obligated to full obedience to God always. God did not sustain the devil’s holiness.

Slide20:

Which brings us back to Romans 9. Here is where we realize we have no power. Here is where we are forced to see that God holds all the cards. Here we see God is Sovereign and we are not.

Slide21:

[Rom 9:18 ESV] So then He has mercy on whomever He wills, and He hardens whomever He wills. [Rom 9:19 ESV] You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who can resist His will?" (Paul knew people would not like the explanation. Paul knew the objection)

Slide22:

Heart Check!!!!! Why don’t we like God being truly sovereign? Because it reveals the true intent of our evil hearts. We want the power. We feel “more safe” thinking our own heart and our own virtue has earned us God’s favor. (It’s the antithesis of The Gospel) We feel safer thinking we have some power that God does not have. “Our Heart”. This truth attacks the core of our sinful/rebellious heart, nature.

Slide23:

Aside from Justice – true fairness – what does God Owe You?

Slide24:

Here it is. Creatures are obligated to their Creator. [ Rom 9:20 ESV] But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me like this?" [Rom 9:21 ESV] Has the potter no right over the clay , to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?

Slide25:

[Rom 9:22 ESV] What if God, desiring to show His wrath and to make known His power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, [Rom 9:23 ESV] in order to make known the riches of His glory for vessels of mercy, which He has prepared beforehand for glory-- [Rom 9:24 ESV] even us whom He has called , not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles?

Slide26:

At the end of the day, the call to action is still the same. What we pursued today revealed that God is even bigger and bigger, He is so powerful, He is Omnipotent.

Slide27:

You would be very wise to Continually Repent : Throw yourself at the feet of Jesus. Beg Him to save you from your evil ways.

Slide28:

The only right answer still remains the same. Adam and Eve ran from God. We are to run to God. Seek God’s Mercy and Grace. [Act 3:19 ESV] Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, [Act 3:20 ESV] that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus,

Slide30:

In the end/beginning. God will sustain your holiness and you will not “be able ” to sin anymore.   [Rev 21:4 ESV] He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."
