A Church Issue?

PowerPoint Presentation:

With a population of 400,000 and being a prominent center of commerce in the Mediterranean world, it was a place for all sorts of vice . An example of its immorality was found in the temple of Venus (Aphrodite), which hosted 1000 priestesses dedicated to prostitution in the name of religion. The city's close proximity to the city of Athens probably added the problem of intellectualism . As noticed in the epistle, such an environment had its effect upon the church in Corinth. It is amazing that a church existed at all in such a city.

PowerPoint Presentation:

A Church Issue!!? Unrepentant Immoral Behavior from Christians 1Cr 5:1 ESV - It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife.

PowerPoint Presentation:

1Cr 5:2 ESV - And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. 1Cr 5:3 ESV - For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. 1Cr 5:4 ESV - When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus,

PowerPoint Presentation:

Sanctification Jesus dying on the cross to take your punishment for sin, should be the Primary motivator for you to continually repent of your sins as God points them out to you from His Word.   Sanctification is the continued process of Christians repenting of revealed sin.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Repentance Starts with a desire for God more than the world. We please God by becoming intimate with God. Studying our Bible Obeying what He Says   Gal 5:17 NIV - For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. Gal 5:18 NIV - But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

PowerPoint Presentation:

This is a Christian, “not non-Christians” who knows what God commands but refuses to obey. 1Cr 5:5 ESV - you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.   Goal: Restoration not condemnation. All Christians are called to destroy the flesh.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Gal 5:22 ESV - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gal 5:23 ESV - gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law . Gal 5:24 ESV - And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

PowerPoint Presentation:

If the unrepentant man is a Christian God will discipline him. Deu 8:5 ESV - Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you.

PowerPoint Presentation:

God’s Discipline, Not always in the form of punishment, but training.   Hbr 12:4 NIV - In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. Hbr 12:5 NIV - And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, Hbr 12:6 NIV - because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son."

PowerPoint Presentation:

Hbr 12:7 NIV - Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? Hbr 12:8 NIV - If you are not disciplined--and everyone undergoes discipline--then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.   Hbr 12:9 NIV - Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!

PowerPoint Presentation:

Hbr 12:10 NIV - They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. Hbr 12:11 NIV - No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.   Hbr 12:12 NIV - Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.

PowerPoint Presentation:

There are large denominations that 1. tolerate 2. accept 3. approve 4. promote immoral behavior that God specifically condemns.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Th e Corinthian church was somehow “tolerant” of this activity.   1Cr 5:6 ESV - Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 1Cr 5:7 ESV - Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.   You don’t tolerate unrepentant evil from Christians, you Lovingly confront it.

PowerPoint Presentation:

1Cr 5:8 ESV - Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.   Don’t hang out with unrepentant Christians like there is nothing wrong . 1Cr 5:9 ESV - I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people-- 1Cr 5:10 ESV - not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 1Cr 5:11 ESV - But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler--not even to eat with such a one.

PowerPoint Presentation:

1Cr 5:12 ESV - For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge ? 1Cr 5:13 ESV - God judges those outside. "Purge the evil person from among you."

PowerPoint Presentation:

The Popular Sin Of Church Hbr 10:24 NIV - And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, Hbr 10:25 NIV - not giving up meeting together , as some are in the habit of doing , but encouraging one another- -and all the more as you see the Day approaching . Never develop a habit of blowing off God’s people. Miss a week here & there, tolerable 4 weeks in a row, SIN
