PowerPoint Presentation:

The Conquest Continues Jdg 1:1 NIV - After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites?" Jdg 1:2 NIV - The LORD answered, "Judah is to go; I have given the land into their hands." Jdg 1:3 NIV - Then the men of Judah said to the Simeonites their brothers, "Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours." So the Simeonites went with them.

Resounding victory. Who is Adoni-Bezek and what is he doing with a name of God? An example of God’s Justice. Not Karma . Jdg 1:5 NIV - It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites . Jdg 1:6 NIV - Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes. Jdg 1:7 NIV - Then Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

Example: Gen 15:2 KJV - And Abram said, Lord = Adonay , GOD = Yĕhovih , what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house [is] this Eliezer of Damascus? (ad-o- noy ') Lord, Master Adonai is the verbal parallel to Yahweh and Jehovah . Adonai is plural; the singular is adon .

Conquest Continues Jdg 1:12 NIV - And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher ." Jdg 1:13 NIV - Othniel son of Kenaz , Caleb's younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage. Jdg 1:14 NIV - One day when she came to Othniel , she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What can I do for you?" Jdg 1:15 NIV - She replied, "Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." Then Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs. Othniel son of Kenaz is the first Judge recorded. 1. Othniel (1st Judge) 3:7-11

Moses in-laws join Judah to live in Desert of Judah. Jdg 1:16 NIV - The descendants of Moses' father-in-law, the Kenite , went up from the City of Palms with the men of Judah to live among the people of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad. Jdg 1:17 NIV - Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their brothers and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath , and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah . ( Hormah means destruction .)

PowerPoint Presentation:

First failure of Judah. Jdg 1:18 NIV - The men of Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron --each city with its territory. Jdg 1:19 NIV - The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had iron chariots.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Was the iron chariots an excuse to fail? Not according to the law of the Lord. Deu 20:1 NIV - When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. Deu 20:2 NIV - When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. Deu 20:3 NIV - He shall say: "Hear, O Israel, today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not be terrified or give way to panic before them. Deu 20:4 NIV - For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory."

PowerPoint Presentation:

Jdg 1:20 NIV - As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak . So What is the big deal?

PowerPoint Presentation:

Who is Caleb? Flash Back! An Amazing Drama recorded in Numbers. Part of the special opts team designated to spy out the Promise land while Israel was still in the wilderness. Num 13:1 NIV - The LORD said to Moses, Num 13:2 NIV - "Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders." Num 13:3 NIV - So at the LORD's command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran . All of them were leaders of the Israelites. Num 13:6 NIV - from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh ; Num 13:8 NIV - from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun; Num 13:16 NIV - These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.)

PowerPoint Presentation:

The report of the Promise Land, Great Place, No way we can take. Caleb and Joshua. God will give us victory! Num 13:25 NIV - At the end of forty days they returned from exploring the land. Num 13:26 NIV - They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran . There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. Num 13:27 NIV - They gave Moses this account: "We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Num 13:28 NIV - But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there . Num 13:29 NIV - The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan."

PowerPoint Presentation:

Caleb says Yes! Num 13:30 NIV - Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it." The others said no. Num 13:31 NIV - But the men who had gone up with him said, "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are."

PowerPoint Presentation:

Pseudo Righteous Coup Num 13:32 NIV - And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. Num 13:33 NIV - We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim ). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."

PowerPoint Presentation:

Open rebellion against God (manna, pillar of smoke & fire) Mt. Sinai, Daily Miracles! Num 14:1 NIV - That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud. Num 14:2 NIV - All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert! Num 14:3 NIV - Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?" Num 14:4 NIV - And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt."

PowerPoint Presentation:

Num 14:6 NIV - Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh , who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes Num 14:7 NIV - and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. Num 14:8 NIV - If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Num 14:9 NIV - Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them." Num 14:10 NIV - But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the Israelites.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Moses intercedes for the people. God is ready to destroy them, right there. Num 14:11 NIV - The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them? Num 14:12 NIV - I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they."

PowerPoint Presentation:

God says they will not go and live in the wilderness for 40 years. Num 14:21 NIV - Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, Num 14:22 NIV - not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times-- Num 14:23 NIV - not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it. Num 14:24 NIV - But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Num 14:33 NIV - Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the desert. Num 14:34 NIV - For forty years--one year for each of the forty days you explored the land--you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.' Num 14:36 NIV - So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it-- Num 14:37 NIV - these men responsible for spreading the bad report about the land were struck down and died of a plague before the LORD. Num 14:38 NIV - Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Back to Judges: Aside from the house of Joseph, Epic Failure Judges 1:21-36. Each tribe attacked, won the battle, but did not destroy their enemies but forced them into slave labor.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Sometimes Good Enough is not Good Enough . Jdg 2:1 NIV - The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I swore to give to your forefathers. I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you, Jdg 2:2 NIV - and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.' Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this? Jdg 2:3 NIV - Now therefore I tell you that I will not drive them out before you; they will be [thorns] in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you." Jdg 2:4 NIV - When the angel of the LORD had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud, Jdg 2:5 NIV - and they called that place Bokim . There they offered sacrifices to the LORD.
