Getting to the Park: Padre Island National Seashore is located southeast of the city of Corpus Christi, Texas, on North Padre Island. Visitors to Corpus Christi should head east through the city on South Padre Island Drive (Highway 358). After crossing the JFK Causeway and the bridge onto Padre Island, continue about 10 miles south on Park Road 22. The physical address for the Malaquite Visitor Center is 20402 Park Road 22, Corpus Christi, TX 78418. The nearest major airport is Corpus Christi International Airport. It is approximately 43 miles away. There is no regularly scheduled public or commercial transportation to the park and no public or commercial transportation within the park. Padre Island National Seashore has 65.5 miles of Gulf beach. Of this, 4.5 miles (Malaquite Beach) are closed to vehicular traffic, 6 miles (North and South Beaches) are open to two-wheel drive vehicles, and the remaining 55 miles (Big Shell and Little Shell Beaches) are open only to four-wheel drive vehicles. The four-wheel drive area begins at the end of South Beach near the 5-mile marker. The Area we will be at is Bob Hall Pier, this is the area shown as Park Headquarters. This is where the showers and camping area is located .

Lodging Camping: Padre Island National Seashore includes a semi-primitive campground and several primitive campgrounds that are all open on a year-round basis. The Malaquite Beach Campground includes 47 sites that are suitable for campers with tents or recreational vehicles. The campground is operated on a first-come, first-served basis. Facilities include picnic tables, restrooms, cold showers, and a sanitary dump station. No electrical, water, or sewage hookups are available. Evening campfire programs are offered during the summer months. Semi-primitive, providing only toilets, rinse showers, picnic tables and 50 designated sites (8 sites are for tent camping only, 26 are for tent or RV camping, and 16 are for RV's only). An $8 fee is required; $4 with a Golden Age or Golden Access passport. There are no hook-ups. There is a gray water dump station and potable water filling station prior to entering the campground. Please do not run generators after 10 p.m. For security, the area is patrolled by rangers. Camping is accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations are accepted. A camping permit is required and is available from the campground host, patrolling rangers, the entrance station, or from the information desk at the Malaquite Visitor Center. Campsites are located less than 100 feet (33 meters) from the beach and have an unobstructed view of the Gulf. The Visitors Center is 1/2 mile south along the beach. Malaquite Campground $8.00 - Day There is an $8 per day fee for use of Malaquite Campground. Beach Camping Permit – you can pitch a tent and camp anywhere on the beach once a permit is obtained.
