Slovakia STRENGHTS: STRENGHTS some of the most important memorabilia from the sphere of the sport development in Slovakia (and also from the Olympic history) is cared for by the museum museum has its own specialized Exhibition of Skiing (Kremnica) where it also presents the Olympic topic in various ways within different occasion-related exhibitions sufficient expert level of knowledge of museum employees in the sphere of the history of Olympism museum has a wide range of expert collaborators museum exhibition activities are directed at and connected with important events of Olympic sports entities (e.g. Olympic Games, Winter Olympic Games, introduction of sports stamps, jubilees of Olympians)WEAKNESSES: WEAKNESSES museum is not incorporated into the system of state museums its founder is a civil association economic and organisational disadvantages of its position in the system of the organisation of museums in Slovakia absence of an act on sport ( the Act on Physical Culture of 1997 which does not reflect the current state in the sports movement is valid in Slovakia) imbalance between the value and preciousness of the managed cultural heritage and the funds available for its management and protection unsatisfactory depositories that are not sufficiently protected and maintained climatically, no restoration and conservation workshop WEAKNESSES: WEAKNESSES limited resources for systematic acquisition activities unsuitable working environment (museum has its seat in rented premises) museum does not have its own permanent exhibition – insufficient mobility of collection objects and their insufficient accessibility to the public insufficient progress in digitizing museum collection objects insufficient promotion and presentation of museum activities abroad inadequate expert human resources at the workplace (small number of professionals) resulting in a small possibility of systematic expert research in the area of the museum specialization WEAKNESSES: WEAKNESSES unsatisfactory involvement of the museum in the integrated educational process within Olympic education – for the reason of their financial demands and human resources the museum ceased its own educational activities insufficient monitoring and prevention of illegal export of cultural heritage objects (also objects of the Olympic movement in Slovakia) insufficiently elaborated system of pricing of museum services (lending of collection objects, photographs and the like) OPPORTUNITIES: OPPORTUNITIES presentation of higher cultural values from the sphere of Olympism in the modern environment using the latest technologies presentation of Olympic collection fund for groups of visitors that usually do not visit a museum attractiveness of Olympic museum collections for professionals and general public interest of general public in this topic (the topic is followed also by a group of people not interested in other museum activities) addressing the people interested in sports activities creating premises where everybody can spend his/her leisure time with the family or friends in a cultural environment convince the public that museums of this type (museum of sport or Olympic museum) should exist OPPORTUNITIES: OPPORTUNITIES special programs for the youth, educational programs, workshops working with people with various disabilities activities connected with Olympic education offering an alternative way of how young people could spend their free time improvement of quality of life of separate groups of the public via special educational programs use of expert human resources background of the museum for the realization of projects developing additional activities related to education and propagation of Olympic culture in Slovakia building up a mutual cooperation of Olympic movement representatives, state authorities and museum network based on a constructive communication resulting in a contribution to more dynamical development of specialized museum activity in Slovakia aimed at Olympism THREATS: THREATS drop in the popularity of watching the Olympic Games reduced influence of the International Olympic Committee and Olympic Movement in the society unclear state cultural policy unclear state policy in the area of the support of sport (Museum´s collection) THREATS: THREATS reduction of financial subsidy for the museum activities non-Olympic sports entities, but also the entities of the Olympic movement in Slovakia showing no interest in the support of museum activities higher financial demands on the acquisition of
